Commuting - Hat's with helmets

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

When I started commuting a few month's ago, I was very anoyed getting sun in my eye's on my morning eastbound commute to school, I ride by the water, so it's even worse.
So then I started wearing a dark green mesh back hat UNDER my helmet. This is the greatest. I also have longish shag, I wear it in a pony tail most of the time, but some of it fall's out when I ride, so the hat also helps keep it back.
The hat is great, it's a dark color so it cuts down on glare. I'm a glasses wearer, so I also appreciate the hat's functionality in the rain, keeps my glasses dry(er)

The Giro helmet I use has a detachable bill, a simple, comfortable and effective solution that doesn't impede the movement of air through the helmet. Rain rides call for a cover, usually kept in the seat pack; in a pinch a hotel shower cap also works. YMMV
My helmet has a visor too.
I dunno about the hat, you'd think it would impede airflow and cause your head to overheat...

Most everyone here in Oly town wears a cycling cap under their helmet during cold weather. Non cyclists kid us about 2 hats, but so what.

When I did a self-supported trip down the pacific coast in 2001, I did the hat thing cuz my nose and cheeks were getting FRIED despite sunscreen. it was awesome. I don't do it much now. I do sometimes wear a cycling cap which works pretty good and is actually better at keeping rain out of your eyes because of the angle. If you are really planning to do it all the time, might make sense to cut ot some holes to let the noggin breath, or better yet, get one a them mesh trucker hats - stylish AND cool.
All my helmets have a visor. Most sit too high on the helmet. On a df bike you can tip your head enough to make the visor work. It is still bad in the afternoon going south in that the sun would peek through the slots in the visor and nearly blind me.
I always wear a headsweat under the helmet. When I went to a recumbent my head was too far back for the helmet visor to do much good. I found a headsweat hat with visor. The sun doesn't get through it.
For riding near water get some wrap-around sun glasses. I also wear glasses and have Performance sun glasses with inserts. The wrap-around helps with air getting behind the glasses and causing tears.

hey what does the little bike hat do anyway?
what's the significance of the fold up brim? why is the hat shaped like that? just curious.

I asked about this before in the "How to survive high temps and UV" thread, but it bugs me:
why is there no helmet with a full circumfrence visor/brim? I mean seriously, about 1/4'th of the time is the sun directly in front of me where my Giro visor does some good, the other 3/4 of the time I'm on my bike the sun is heating up my neck/face/ears.
Bugs me to no end that no one makes something like this.
To top it off, my wife is alergic to sunlight, she seriously needs a helmet like this to bike with during the day.

I have a mesh back hat so my head can still breath. I have had helmets with "visors" for years, but their good for nothing. They don't do anything to keep sun out of your eyes. I wear the same hat all the time, but I guesse if you were worried about overheating you could cut the hat up, leaving only enough to keep it on your head.

Wearing a hat under your helment might not be a good idea in a crash? (it might bump the pavement first and cause the helmet to lift up off your head? Maybe not? I'm a big safety first guy)
As far as the sun and rain goes it's a totally good idea!
I used to have an old Bell helmet that I used little velcro patches to stick a Burger King visor (the kind the girls in the dive thru wear) to the frount of it. Worked really well. Taping those cardboard crowns kids used to get to your helmet was even cooler, however. And French fry oil makes a pretty good chain lube. Welcome to the great cycling underclass, david! I'm a big believer in doing what works.

I've seen pictures of pros like Lance wearing cycling caps underneath their helmets. Also, I don't think a hat is stiff enough to lift your helmet off your head in the event of a crash. It would probably bend first.

The visor on my helmet is not enough and often useless. I have worn a ball cap or a sunvisor occasionally and like the results much better. :)
