I'm new to the bike forum, but I've been bicycling for at least 40 years, and I've been on other forums. (I'm a moderator on BigSoccer.com, but I rarely admit it)
I started cycling as in kid (in the 50s!!) and I've been at it off and on ever since. I used to ride to school every day, even in the winter. When I went to junior high school (now they call them middle schools), the bike racks would be full on the good days. On bad days, when it was cold and snowing, mine would be the only bike. After school on the good days, and on the weekends, I would ride for hours. I used to do tricks and jumps in a little park on the street on which I lived (I'm talking baloon tire bikes, now - ah, the memories!!)
One day I was showing off and went over the handlebars (this was on my single speed 'racer'). I was hurt pretty bad - the doctors thought I might die. (Scared my mother pretty good). I recovered fully, and lived to ride another day, just as much a maniac as ever.
I went to college in town, and rode there quite a lot. After college I converted to the automobile pretty much, but still rode a bike occasionally, just for old time sake.
Eventually I got a job only about 6 miles from home, commuted there on the good days, and drove the car the rest of the time.
Now that I'm an old geezer, I'm riding simply for fun again. I have a mountain bike (which isn't quite as much fun as the baloon tire bike I had as a kid), and I have a 'new' road bike, which I like only sightly better than my old road bike, which I like only slightly better than the single-speed "racer" I fell off of as a kid.
In other words, I like riding. I had a good ride today in the heat and humidity. Some people who saw me probably thought I was nuts. The joke's on them. I was having fun.
Cheers
