Training & Nutrition - Does anyone else loathe and despise the indoor trainer?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
As if it weren't bad enough being on the trainer in the winter, it is now cold and raining here and probably will be like this for a few days. I suppose I should keep up my fitness by getting back on the indoor trainer, but even an hour of that is torture for me. It doesn't seem to matter if I am listening to music, it's just so looooong and tedious!!!!
Just wanted to rant....I am procrastinating getting on it in a big way.

My gf can't get enough of the indoor trainer. In fact, I think she's dying to hop on it today. :p

I just watch TV which does a pretty good job of taking my mind off of the tedium. I will only listen to music when doing short intense workouts.
Quite often I'll choose the trainer over an outdoor ride, even when the weather's nice. Examples are during rush hour when people are driving like as*holes to shave a few minutes off of their commute time and when school lets out and there are a bunch of grade school brats running around and yelling at you. I thought they were just yelling at me but I've seen other cyclists ride nearby and they got an earful of bratling gibberish as well. Kids these days. Ha! My father would have knocked me into next week for smarting off to an adult like that.

Yes, I think they doth sucketh. I rode mine one time when I first got it, and thankfully the good old Florida weather has been kind. Unfortunately, hurricane season is lurking.

You live where it's sunny and beautiful all the time! Not even a fair comparison. Florida is a cycing friendly State too. Last time I was there I saw more people out on bikes in just 4 days that I see all f'ing year around here. I'm not kidding either. Sarasota was full of cyclists young and old. I'd love to be able to afford to live around there.
I have one. I'd rather ride in the rain.
Except that it's a necessary evil for a parent with young kids. When the kids go down for the evening, my wife can go out and shop or go to the gym or whatever, and I can get some virtual miles without leaving the house.
But I still hate it.

So true, I am passionate about biking, and this is the ideal location. We have had a very unusual rain pattern this week - rain in the morning. Each afternoon would clear up allowing a nice ride, and I already have 130 miles in this week with two long rides to go this weekend. Orlando, BTW, was voted the most bike friendly city in the USA.

it's all about intervals. for me, that's the only way to pass the time. other things help too, like wearing a HRM. between staying in certain zones, intervals, warm up and cool down, and watching racing DVDs it's usually enough to get me through a 45min to 1 hour workout. can't do much more than that though.
the thing i enjoy most about the trainer is that i get a fantastic workout in much less time than i would out on the road with traffic and all that. when i'm pressed for time, a short time on the trainer is better than nothing at all. plus i don't have to wear a jersey....less laundry.

I HATE riding on my trainer! I force myself to do it every once in a while, however. Riding any longer than an hour on it becomes unbearable. I usually end up doing intervals which, for some reason, makes the time pass quicker.
Anybody do commercial intervals? I'll just spin along at an aerobic pace during the show and when the commercial comes on, I'll ramp it up. Since the commercial break is usually 4 x 30 sec. ads, I'll click up a bigger gear and maintain the same cadence, clicking up each commercial. It's a killer.

 I know how you feel. A friend at work gave me an old trainer a while back. After a couple of weeks trying it out, I'm ready to give it back!! At my lactate threshold, I'm literally raining sweat!

I just got mine today and only did 30 minutes but it's no more boring than my elliptical trainer that's upstairs with the little TV and basic cable. I watched a show recorded on the DVR on my big screen TV today. :D For me, the problem is heat and too many hills in my immediate neighborhood. There are times when it's jump on the trainer or don't work out at all so I'll take the trainer.

Yet another reason to loathe commercials!
Let's face it, the trainer or spinning class just isn't the same, and that's why we are so disappointed in it. Just don't expect to be as much fun as a bike ride! We had sh*tty weather here as well, for most of may! You know, it's funny but even if you don't gain weight, when you aren't able to get out and get as much exercise, you feel like a big fat slob. I'm sure I don't look any different but i keep thinking my *ss has gotten fatter. Finally the weather is nice!

Well, let's see. I live in Western Washington. In October, it starts to rain, and stops sometime around the end of June.
I find when it is 35F and pouring enough rain to overcome any Gortex known to man, I prefer to just pop in a DVD in my computer and pedal away in peace and quiet.
Yes, I despise trainers. Like Caloso, I'd rather ride in the rain. My trainer is reserved for warmups before a race. Otherwise, it sits in the garabe gathering dust.
And skydive69, I'll take daytime temps in the upper 50's and rain over heat and humidity anyday. Plus, we've got lots of nice rugged terrain her in NorCal.

Get on the trainer
pick an easy cadence
spin for 20 minutes
get off the trainer
and know that you have done it.
