Picked up a Straight 8 in March, 2006 and have ridden it over 100 days this year on my commute (8km one way in Calgary, Alberta) to and from work. It rides very well and soaks up the bumps very nice and is able to be bunny hopped off/on curbs. Works well on pavement/cement/shale and hard pack - loose gravel and sand on pavement are things to watch out for though. As for speed, could be faster but the 3 speed gearing just doesn't allow for as fast of a ride as a touring bike (my past commuter ride). Hills aren't a problem and I've even peeved off more than a few mountain bike commuters when I pass them on the flats and on the hills. Stability - again watch for gravel and sand on the roads (those 3 inch Fattie O's will slide). Things that will have to be relearned include remembering that you can't reach for the levers to brake and getting used to having your pedals in the right position after you've braked to a stop.

Over all, my Straight 8 has proven to be a very good commuter that's very quite and comfortable and it's a ride that really gets the looks - make sure you have a good lock and don't be surprised to see a number of people admiring your Straight 8 when you come out of the grocery store or where ever you've cycled to. Happy, yeah more than I would've imagined and now trying to convince the wife that a Hell Billy would be a great ride for her.

Felt also makes some retro-style cruisers, a couple have one or both 3-inch tires (the Chief has both 3" tires). Felt's cruisers cost somewhat more than Electras, that I have seen: http://www.feltracing.com/
