I'm trying to raise the bars on a 10-15 year old Miyata 600GT by replacing the stem with a Nitto Technomic. But I can't quite remove one of the barcons to let me slip the stems off and on. The front/left shifter is a "Power Shifter," while the rear/right is an "Accushift" (indexed).
Working on the front/right, I've undone a handscrew thingie in the center of the shifter (facing inward) which let me pull away the shifter part and revealed an allen screw facing out from the bar end. I undid this screw, and can move the barcon off the end of the bar, dangling by the shift cable.
Problem is, it's still dangling, an inch or so off the bar. How can I detach the shifter from the cable? I don't see any screws, just what looks likes like a rivet on top of the thumb-shifter. I can't slide the foam grips over the dangling shifter, never mind the stems.
AND, speaking of stems: My bars are "Sakae Road Champion Randnner", and from reading Sheldon Brown I guess these are 25.4. Unfortuneately, I bought a 26 stem. Am I right to assume the bars are 25.4? If so, should I return the stem for a 25.4 (eating the shipping and waiting, waiting) or should I shim it with, say, part of an aluminum can?
Thanks for any help, and for this great forum!
