OK, I called my LBS, and asked the owner if they had any SpokePrep on hand. He said yes, but that I could use latex paint, since that's all it is. Latex paint?

Now, this guy is an old hand, very reliable, and builds lots of wheels. Not someone to make bold, unsubstantiated claims. But, whoa, latex paint? That's just weird enought that I had to check it out. I googled it, in multiple configurations, and found nothing, other than that Wheelsmith says that SpokePrep has teflon in it, which I'm guessing is not in regular latex paint. And thinking on it a bit, it might make some sense: a lube when wet, drying to a sticky but pliable substance.

Has anyone heard this before?

No, but I've just been using beeswax.

Beeswax is a wonder substance. Among other things, it works great on threads. It prevents both loosening and seizing and at the same time lubricates just enough so things move smoothly when you want them to.

I imagine latex paint might work though. It dries to a slightly rubbery consistency, so it might have a similar effect as SpokePrep or beeswax: preventing the nipples from rotating on their own, but at the same time preventing the nipple from freezing on the threads.
