No, just the opposite - my cycling began because of a relationship. One day, my fiance, a triathlete, showed up with two bikes attached to the back of her car, and told me to get my lazy butt off the couch. She pointed out that we were going to go for a bicycle ride, and have a picnic lunch. I hadn't ridden since I was a kid. That was one year and 7200 miles and many races ago.

Well, come to think of it, I did meet my hero through cycling. John Sinibaldi, two time olympian, 10 time national champion and inductee into the cycling hall of fame.

My wife and I met in a geography class at the local university. One day after class she walked with me back to the bike racks, and when she saw my bike, she asked me if I raced. We talked about bikes for a bit and when I asked her what kind of components she had on her bike, she told me "Shimano 600" (600 was the precursor to Ultegra). I was in love! Our first date was a 25 mile bike ride. We've been together for 16 years and still ride together.

Since I don't fit into the usual bike herds, no... :(

Now that I have road and mountain bikes I feel like a man with two mistresses. How to divide the time between two that I both love? Fast and hard, or technical and rugged?

My bike never complains when I come home late, work weekends, talk with guys, talk about the lab, or read journal articles during "our time" (only when on the trainer, not the road). Doesn't complain about my cooking either. Just requires some lube and new parts every once in a while, and kicks my arse if I spend too much time away from it.

I'm single and loving it. I get enough crap from my parents.

Nothing so far that came close to working. I blame myself, not the bike.

I met my first gf on my bike. She said she thought I was all that becuase I had a good pair of glasses, gloves and a nice bike just cycling. She said I looked good and I turned out to be really nice and not cocky at all like she though.

I wish.... so far I've only met one really cool biking lady, but she's more interested in being friends...doh!

Cycling was one reason one girl gave to not go out with me. Met this one girl on a organized ride...had too many "warning signs" crop up dropped ran like a bat out of H*ll. When I met my wife, she asked what I did for fun. I told her cycling. The first time she saw me in shorts, she realized that cycling is something that she will support. Bought her a bike and we have rode a couple of times. She had no problems keeping with my "slow" pace, granted it wasn't a long ride but still the potential is there. When she gets done with school (this December) and gets a job, hopefully we have time to ride. She has already "claimed" one of my SS bikes as hers. And you know I will not have a problem with that.

Aug 1997,a few clubmates and I were training for the provincial hill climb championships, after about 20 trips up the hill I'm dog ass tired but while we're at the bottom deciding where to go for a cold one I spy 2 girls riding up the hill and being the guy I am I just couldn't call it a day so me and a pal went off in hot pursuit, caught up,chatted and invited them along for coffee's.
now almost 8 years later we are very happily married and just had our second child 3 weeks ago.

I feel really fortunate to have found someone who not only understands my passion for cycling but shares it as well.

I work at a corporate fitness center and after I bought my first mountain bike many, many years ago (a Bridgestone MB-3) I brought it in to show it off to my coworkers. We have a huge, floor-to-ceiling glass window/wall so I was out in the parking lot riding around with the biggest sh*t-eating grin plastered on my face. One of our members, Bob, walked outside to check out my bike and pretty soon invited me on a ride. We hooked up the following Saturday with his buddies and I had the most awesome time! Mind you, I had absolutely no bike-handling skills for the narrow singletracks but my sheer enthusiasm and endurance had impressed them enough to be invited again. Pretty soon I was placed on their mountain bike email list and I conistently showed up on their rides. Sometimes there would be a big group, sometimes it was just me and Bob. Every ride always ended with a nice (late) lunch at a deli nearby with just good ole socializing and lots of laughter. After a summer of riding and several "Me & Bob" rides, we just started to hang out doing stuff other than riding. He's a car enthusiast (muscle cars) and was pleased as punch when he learned I was a truck girl. Love those first-generation Broncos! I also ride motorcycles (sportbikes) and he does, too. I can't really place a day or time or when we started "dating". But we eventually moved our friendship to a romantic relationship.

Don't know if you're familiar with a cable show called "Overhaulin" where people get their cars "stolen" but is actually restored in 7 days while they frantically try to pin the "cops" to get them to find their cars. Well, Bob had "stolen" my Bridgestone and took it to a shop to have suspension added to it. In the meantime I was heartbroken that my bike was missing but he surprised me two days later! I'll never forget that! Anyhow, fast-forward to today and Bob and I have been happily married for 7 years and between the two of us, have 7 bikes, 5 motorcycles and 5 cars (1 being a truck, of course).

Cydewaze (another forum member) and I met on a U2 message board. He lived in MD, and I in Toronto. At the time I hadn't ridden since childhood, but I found his athleticism and interest in cycling to be tremendously inspiring and sexy. Last year I started visiting him almost monthly and he bought me my first road bike (a Lemond Reno). Little did he know he created a monster! Now that I am here almost full time, I am constantly asking him questions, going for rides, etc etc. I am almost as much of a keener as he is, and it's such a great thing for us to do together.

It is costing him a fortune though, with him getting my bike repaired when I crash, buying me better accessories and new jerseys etc. :D
