Bicycle Mechanics - Diagnose Ominous Sound

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have an old Univega mountain bike. It's recently started making these kind of cracking or knocking sounds when I'm pedaling, especially when I'm pushing hard. Since I can feel something through the cranks that corresponds to the sounds I'm assuming the problem is somewhere in the crank assembly. I cannot see anything visibly hitting anything else, nor can I see any cracks. Could it be the bearings? Any other ideas?
When is the last time the bottom bracket bearings were repacked?

Does it seem to be associated with a particular side of the bike? It could be an issue with a pedal rather than the bottom bracket.

Hmmm... that would be never...

It does seem to do it more on the right side, but the fact that it still does it on the left would seem to rule that out no?

If it is more of a creaking sound vs a knocking sound, I'd try snugging up the crankarms and see what happens.
Does the creak happen when sitting, standing, or both?

Both--any time I'm pedaling.
