I'm planning on taking my 8 year old daughter on a long cycle tour later this summer on our Burley tandem. It will be about 450miles over 7 days (RAGBRAI). We've been doing some training together and she is complaining a bit about the size and the shape of the saddle which is, of course, designed for an adult behind. I think it's much too wide for her. I'm wondering if anyone here knows of kid sized saddles that might help her enjoy the miles a bit more. Thanks!

I'm not too sure about it. Around here, there is one child model by ivelo, but my daughter actually prefers the stock saddle that came with the Co-Motion.

On the other hand, the Addams Trail-a-Bike we got five years ago (since replaced by a Piccolo) had a child saddle covered with a different kind of fabric, and she really likes it. Alas, there is no name on that saddle and I have not been able to find another one.

I think the trail-a-bike seat is very similar to the Serfas Reactive Kid's model. About $15 in bike stores.

The one I have doesn't have all those bumps.

My 8 year old son does well on a skinny, racing type saddle. The one we have is a no-namer, but its similar in shape to a Flite saddle. I'm not aware of any kid-specific saddles.

Great advice, thanks--I appreciate the link to the Serfas Reactive Kid's saddle. That may be a good solution. I will also check out the saddles on the Piccolo. My LBS is a Burley dealer and may be able to get a Piccolo saddle for our tandem.

About a year ago I purchased a Schwinn Child saddle from someone on ebay. It is pretty nice. It has an anatomical cut out in the middle, nice padding, and sort of a lycra or nylon type covering, not vinyl. It was grey and black.

Thanks, Rich. I ended up picking up a child's BMX saddle to try...the LBS is letting me try it out to see how my daughter likes it. If it works we will be set. Although it's not pink (her primary concern), I expect I can find a pink lycra cover for it!

For $20 Bell puts out a child's saddle (not pink!) but it has a built-in rear light actuated by a switch. Saw it in, of all places . . . a Smiths grocery store!
When in doubt, check it out!

$20 for a saddle with rear light--what a great idea for a kids bike. You definitely can't make them too safe. I think the saddle I found at the LBS is working out, but I'll keep the Bell in mind, if not for the tandem, for her single bike. Thanks, Zona!
