found this article where AMD technology is used to make the discovery team faster/more aerodynamic... also, the bike lance is riding would be a sweet track ride

i just thought the bike was pretty nice, especially for anyone here that rides the 'drome, or those boston riders who make it out to MIT on thursdays

On the 'drome or in the street, steel is real.

Yeah, I heard. I'm trapped here at the apple show all week.

Maybe Apple can successfully cripple another processor with bad software LOL

Anyway, Lance rides a fixed gear at the beginning of each season for training too.

Sorry to Hijack this thread but, any truth to the rumours that Apple will be releasing the Powerbook G5 soon?

I haven't heard a word about it, but I'm dubious.

i doubt there will ever be a G5 powerbook.

Won't happen. Scuttlebutt has this as a large reason why Apple jumped the PPC ship: IBM can't get the power/heat down on a G5-class processor to make it suitable for portable use.

It opens an intriguing set of possibilities to be sure. I haven't figured out if this is genius or madness.

so my burning question is, are these just stock x86 systems or is this an agreement for intel to make a proprietary chipset/bios set for apple?

damnit guys, i come on this forum to be able to follow the conversations..this computer stuff goes way over my head.

Intel doesn't make the BIOS and Open Firmware is a Forth-based BIOS which is famously portable, so it's quite possible that they could go with an off-the-shelf system. On the other hand, one of the things that Jobs supposedly learned at NeXT (which produced a version of NeXTstep that would run on vanilla x86 boxes) was the power of "controlling the entire widget".

I expect an x86 Mac will not be a plain ol' PC but at the same time it won't be so radically different that you won't be able to use it in some sort of cheap-o compatibility mode.

powerbook g5 is already in the making pretty much. They have been working on it for almost 2 years. Underground secret mac info.

holy geekins!

We went from Track to dis to bikes to lost pictures to a FRIGGIN apple discussion. I love this place. I feel like I should cut the track discussion (no offense go4broke44) and pass the rest off to the FOO forums!

note > Anyone mentions "Tux, the linux mascot" and I trash the thread. :)

latest news is that the development pentium4 mac uses phoenix BIOS and no open firmware, however this is on the generic development kit they issued to programmers. being apple, i expect that intel powermacs will most likely have some sort of proprietary component, like the mobo or something, to differentiate it from off-the-shelf systems. though apparently apple will do nothing to prevent you from installing windows on any intel mac (provided you can get drivers) which is pretty cool (if you're into that windoze thing).

from the implications for why they're "switching," i'm assuming the first products to go intel will be the g4 systems; powerbook, ibook, mac mini will likely move to pentium m's, with the powerbook getting the dual core that's coming out sometime later this year. the powermacs, and possibly imacs, will most likely stay with g5's until intel releases merom sometime in the second half of 2006, which i think will be intel's first dual-core 64-bit pentium(?)

sorry to get so off topic with this discussion...
