I follow the Friel book and use the 3 wk. hard then 1 wk easy method. I have found that during the third hard week I am not able to reach desired heart rate levels. For example, for the 3 minute interval I am not able to reach the zone 5b level. However, during the 2nd. week I could.
Question, is it advisable to trudge throught the third week or go, as I have seen suggested, to a 2 wk hard then 1 wk easy schedule? I am wondering if the overextension in the third week would enable one to achieve a greater level of fitness, more so than if only 2 weeks of hard effort are done. Note that by overextension I mean pushing oneself to go hard even though it seems the body may be tired. I understand that before overtraining occurs there is an overextension which is a state that is easier to recover from, as compared to overtraining.
Any thoughts?
