I just drove all the way through the outer banks....not a single fixed gear bike, but LOTS of beach cruisers. How do these people live with themselves?

It is very different from NYC where you see a FG every few blocks.

Dude I walked all over Tokyo and never saw a single fixed gear bike. Potus claims he once saw a SS somewhere, but the claim couldn't be verified. We saw one in Utsonomiya though (a mile from the velodrome).

in my mind Nags Head isnt even a city or town or whatever it actualy is, all i think of is strips of tall houses and a beach

agreed. As I was driving through last week I kept waiting for the downtown area to materialize....guess I missed it.

There are some fixie riders in Manteo, 5 miles away. Most of the 'cruisers' are tourists.

The FG is almost a purely urban thing. I live in a rural MD county of 33k people. 2 fixies that I know of. Mine and a friends. I did see a messenger from NYC a year or so ago visiting his sister here and was riding a fixed conversion. The OBX is a beach community so thus the "Beach Cruisers"

I remember seeing a really hot old schwinn Jaguar (I think) on FGG that somebody had converted to a FG. THAT is what you should ride at the beach!

I rode last summer on the OBX on the bike with gears.... It's a wicked unfriendly place for cycling; if I had a dollar for every "***" or "get on the sidewalk" comment I got, damn, I'd retire out there.... Still, hammering south-to-north with a 25mph tail-wind was righteous, as was riding the 3-mile long causeway over Oregon Inlet -- the descent from the apex of that bridge was schweeeeeet....
