Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Cashing in on the fixie craze?

OK, I think I remember seeing this same bike on CL here in Philly, but listed as a re-painted Surly track bike. Yes, yes... those rare track bikes with vertical dropouts and front and rear brakes. But, hey, at 7 lbs it worth it's weight in tin.

that really nothing, you should see how people cash in on burning man bikes here in the bay area.....from now until burning man there are all kinds of "burning man specials" that lists all kinds of cheap crap for $300+


not to mention the pos bike vendors on the way in.....all i could do last year was laugh and ask if people really pay that kind of money for this pos bikes....and the guys just laughed...well actually we all laughed at stupid people that day...

I especially like the silver paint on the chain, it really gives you a sense of how fast you are going.

There's some Gitane conversion on there today for nearly 400. It's a 531 frame, but c'mon.

that's how you get your weight down to seven pounds. take off all of the unimportant stuff.

Why aren't we all cashing in on the craze? I'm seriously considering doing road conversions of interesting old road frames with simple but quality parts (IRO hubs, bulletproof cranks, etc.), and selling them for reasonable prices.

A bike I'd sell for 300$ I might spend 200$ in parts for, which could build up a decent and safe ride, unlike these scary things...

I dunno, maybe its 'selling out', or maybe its just providing an honest alternative to these dangerous bikes..

Just don't try to pass them off as "track bikes". And for God's sake, no JB Weld. I think that most of the people who do this, use either Suzue Jr.'s or they JB weld the cog on with a BB lockring. That way they only spend something like 100 bucks and increase their profit.

crap, i hope i don't look like some ******bag that's trying to cash in because i am putting my conversion up on ebay tomorrow. it does however atleast have a formula hub, durace ace cog/lockring, alex dh15 rims, campy cranks, nitto stem..yeah. selling your own bikes sucks! i am in the process of selling a mountain bike on ebay right now as well.

Definately no 'track bike' aspirations for my road conversions! And while I'm happy using JB Weld for my own things, I have enough professional integrity not to allow that kind of thing to be sold, and definately not misrepresented.

Nice thriftstore bike in good working order: 20$
IRO rear hub built into existing rear wheel: 45$
Duraace cog and lockring: 35$
Tires: 20$

Cost: 120$ in supplies for a safe and respectable road conversion, assuming existing brake works well. Might sell reasonably for 250$

Shimano bottom bracket: 15$
Bulletproof or equivalent crankset: 35$
Chainring: 20$

Cost: 190$ in supplies for a nice road conversion with all-new drivetrain. Might sell reasonably for 320$

Nice brake caliper: 20$
Bar end lever: 10$
Syntace bullhorns: 15$

Cost: 235$ in supplies for a pretty sweet road conversion. Might sell reasonably for 370$

Brooks saddle: 60$
Nice seatpost: 15$

Cost: 310$ in supplies for a sweet road conversion you could ride all day.

And so on...

I'm just pulling numbers out of my head, so this isn't perfect, but its a good example of how you could sell a safe and respectable bike for cheap. Sure you wouldn't make as much profit, but you wouldn't be cashing in on stupidity, which is a lame way to make money.
