I was all set to do a dirtbag long haul mid life crisis tour of Spain on the camino de santiago some time in the next few years, when my wife mentioned that she might be interested in coming along.

She is a novice cyclist, but having her along for the ride would be great. Her coming along would change the logistics greatly, but I was really excited to hear that she was interested.

Does anyone have any kind of advice? We'll probably camp some and hotel some. We both speak Spanish pretty well. She lived there for a while, but I have never been. It will have to be a summer trip (we're teachers). I would really like to see Barcelona and Madrid. Daily mileage would have to be in the 40-60 range.

I actually thought about contacting a tour company so we wouldn't have to ship the bikes, until I saw the cost.

Which route of the camino youīre going to take? If you want to see both Barcelona and Madrid then camino frances (from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France) is your choice although a little detour is required. with 60m a day you can finish the camino frances in about 9 days. I think probably itīs better to start from Barcelona to save the time going down (if time is a consideration)

The refugios are well-equipped and really cheap, for peregrinos you know so I donīt think camping is necessary.

60 miles a day is not low key. That sounds stressful, especially in the spanish summer heat. Try 60 km a day instead. No need to rush it.
