Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - let's build a keirin/njs bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

all this talk of e-framebank and keirin frames got me wondering; how would you spec a keirin build from the ground up? it's not something i know a whole lot about, so educate me!
here's what i would do, but i would love to hear about other stuff.
(this is for a real-world build, so i'm leaving out the campy njs gruppo, as well as the shimano 10-pitch stuff)
frame: flavor of your choice, (mine is 3rensho 'cause i used to own one)
hubs: da high-flange, natch
cranks: 2nd generation da (fluted)
stem: nitto jaguar
seatpost: nitto pearl
bb: hatta? swan?
headset: hatta? swan?
bars: nitto b123 38cm (i'm a skinny guy)
pedals: no clue
straps: no clue
grips: no clue
did i forget anything? prolly.

Don't you have to be 100% pure blooded Japanese to get the njs approval?

usually i think, but somewhere out there is a campagnolo njs group. i'v never even seen pics, but i've heard from a number of sources that it exists, and, iirc, a seatpost or something showed up on ebay a while back.

I'd love to have one of those purple Vogue frames, if I could find one in my size. Curse my gaikokujin legs!
I can't decide if I'd go with a Sugino/Suzue/Nitto setup or a D-A/Nitto setup. The D-A parts are pretty hot, but my years of "champagne appetite on a beer budget" have steered me towards Sugino.

I heard a story whereby the NJS continually rejected Campy stuff as 'too weak' to protect the Japanese purity and then one year Campy produced an FU line that they could not reject. Could be urban biker myth though.
last weekend Tomity showed me the Campy catalog that had the NJS stuff in it. I think he has the hubs. you can probably find some info at campyonly.com. If I wasn't on a dial-up I'd look myself. plus I'm lazy.
hatta and swan are the same. I think hatta is the mfg, swan is the model.
definitely Dura Ace / Nitto. the sugino 75 crank doesn't compare to the shimano. and disco hubs? c'mon. the D/A are mo’ pretty.

for pedals you might spec one of the several NJS approved models made by MKS.
msl.
gotta go all ace. make me proud. mks tugs, pedals, and kashmax seat and straps!
with all this talk about keirin lately I thought I'd show off a little and post a pic of my current keirin booty...

You've got the seatpost and the stem backwards, and the pearl's a road stem. What about the rest of the wheels? Are there NJS approved spokes and tubulars? Or is it fair game as long as there're 36 spokes to a wheel?
the only NJS rim I know of is the Araya Gold.
Swan is a Hatta model BB and headset. The headset is unsealed, so I went with D/A. I also went with 7600 D/A, not 7700. One, the ***** looks nicer, two, there are no 7700 high-flange hubs, three, a little bird told me the splined BB isn't as good as the square one.
I brought the hubs back from Japan, but John at businesscycles laced them to Arayas for me. I mounted Vredestein Tricomp fortezza tubulars yesterday. I guess if you're an NJS freak you won't like my 32 hole hubs (non-NJS) or rims, but I didn't see the need for 36. I saw lots of Keirin bikes with Arayas when I was there. I love their traditional profile and finish.
This bike has 38cm B123AA drops. I have 36cm B123s that are waiting for the Kalavinka. The wheels will also go on it, along with my Jaguar seatpost and MKS custom nuevo pedals and NJS straps.

Just wanted to comment on your skinny Bars - heh heh. I've been collecting parts for my dream bike - and being a smaller dood, I've found it kinda of tricky. But it's coming together. I was so happy to find and order Nitto B123 36cm from Business Cycles. Got this email yesterday >> "This model has just now become available in 36, but it will be about a week before I have 36's here."
Sweeet. So anyone in need of smaller bars 36cm - http://www.businesscycles.com - will have some next week. (what can I say? I'm a skinny dood)
heh heh

frame: Has to be a Nagasawa, got to get one mind you!
hubs: DA high-flange,7600, although I have some 36 hole Record LF with njs stamp, I didn't even realise when I bought them!
rims. Araya ADX 1, 36 hole
cranks: Octalink Dura Ace, or maybe 7600
stem: Nitto jaguar
seatpost: Sugino because I already have one, or the nitto jaguar
bb: octalink or 7600, depending on cranks
headset: Hatta
bars: Nitto b123 40cm
pedals: MKS RX-1
clips: MKS
straps: ERREBI double
grips: SOYO
saddle: Kashimax 5 gold
Just a question of finding that Frame, at a price I want to pay, the quest continues!

Double straps are not NJS, in case you care.

Don't even think about using the Dura Ace easton tubed seatpin, I've broken two at the tube/seatpin clamp interface and have friends that have broken theirs. I still can't believe how it got NJS approval!!

How come no one has said Suntour Superbe??
If the Superbe Hubs i have were 36 as opposed to 32, and I had Araya rims, i'd have a full NJS Suntour Superbe Pro/Nitto group I beleive.

Wow, a 3Rensho, fixed gears equivalent to the Holy Grial. The holiest of holies. You were once blessed by greatness, nay, immortality.
Well, just march back to the guy's house and get your bike back. May I suggest that you do this while he's at work too.

really? I have one of these myself. should I be scared? I've never witnessed a broken seatpin let alone four.
as far as NJS is concerned, I could be wrong but I think it has more to do with keeping a level playing field, not strength. primary concern is to not give any rider a technological advantage. ...a broken seatpin ain't really an advantage.

No it is true Campy does have a NJS group. It is a C record version.
No MYTH here! Hard to get .

Yes He is correct. Pearl is just a model name of Nittos. I had a NJS pearl stem on my old paNASONIC.

Most of them use steel seat pins with KEIRIN stamped on them. We over tighten our pins. I broken Campy and others before but I stick with steel pins now.

and now there's more, HA HA HA HA HA! (that was supposed to sound menacing)
last weekend I went to the Takizawa store. they're pretty much the Performance/Nashbar of Japan. with the exception that there's a NJS section in the store. I had to change my undies for the train ride home.
I don't need to read that. An NJS section...yeesh!
Does NJS stuff cost less over there? I have a friend who's going to be in Japan for a week or so, is it worth it for him to pick up a crankset, seatpost, chain, stem, and bars for me?
I think I gave an answer to this elsewhere. I bought about $700 worth of parts from Takizawa while I was there. The D/A 7600 parts were very cheap--comparable to their original US prices--but other parts were about the same. Here are the prices I paid for some of the parts. I paid about $150 for 7600 hf hubs.
D/A 7600-R track crank, 165mm. /17850 yen
HKK silver vertex chain. /2822 yen
MKS custom nuevo pedals. /10936 yen
Nitto 65 degree 100 mm stem, steel. /11655 yen
Edit: divide everything by 105 to get prices in US dollars.

Yes, I'm a lazy ass. But at least I can divide: 17850 yen = $170 :)

I got those from Tomity (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=92884). he still has two more stems, I think 120mm and 100mm. I don't think he has anymore bars.
I forgot to mention they were having a sale, everything was 10% off :p
You also forgot to mention Tomity's speciality: ground, polished, and plated D/A cogs and chainrings for that super-smooth feeling.

and his Mary Poppins-esque gym bag that keirin parts magically appear from.
I got a cog from Tomity. Well you just wait and see when I go back....you have not seen anything yet! LOL..... :D have 4 keirin frames going up so parts will be gobbled up.
the Exchange rate changes everyday. so dsome good some bad days. Not like years before... 145-545 yen to the dollar.

Your D/A seatposts must have been damaged or individually defective. I am a big guy, 200lbs 6' etc etc. I have broken 5 or 6 frames (only one was aluminum), bent a Ritchey seatpost and broke 2 or 3 stems as a messenger and racer in Seattle. I have been riding the D/A Easton NJS post on my Steamroller for two years, even raced cyclocross on it last season, and I have had no problem with my post.
Current steed is all 7600 D/A and Nitto with three non NJS exceptions Speedplay zero track pedals, Selle Italia Ti Flite and a custom Desalvo (Ashland, OR) frame and fork.
PS I just recently sold a Suntour Superbe Pro Grouppo that was 90% NJS (32 hub vs 36 and a rare non NJS Superbe stem where the only non NJS parts)
Speaking about Dura Ace track parts, check out the Takizawa online parts catalog:
http://www.takizawa-web.com/shimano05/duratrack.html
That catalog can be somewhat misleading. They don't stock everything, I can assure you.
