Mountain Biking - "Messed up" teeth on chainring

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
When I was younger, one didn't want "missing," nubbed, or twisted teeth on one's chainring (or in one's mouth  ). Am I right in thinking that rings are now designed this way?
Mine still look more messed up than what is shown on Shimano's website.
Usually, you'll see ramps on the side of the chainring, and maybe a shorter tooth after the ramp, but I have yet to see any missing teeth. Your smallest chainring should be pretty much normal looking though.
