Mountain Biking - Help me decide which new XC bike!

Hello all. Yes, I'm a newbie, and I did search for the answer to my question before posting. This is pretty specific, though.

I'm finally replacing my old Schwinn MTB. I found a couple Specialized bikes that I really like. I was ready to pull the trigger on a new Rockhopper Comp, but after talking to one of the sales guys at my LBS, I rode a XC Pro. For some reason I didn't realize that a bike at this price point could have front and rear lockout and weith the same as the HT Rockhopper. Anyway, I enjoyed the feel of this bike.

I realize the XC Pro is almost twice the price of the Rockhopper, but I'm not too worried about that. I'll have it a LONG time as I have my Schwinn. I just want what makes the most sense. I'll be riding local MTB trails as often as I can, and I'll be riding paved bike paths with the family as well. I suppose I could keep the Schwinn for road use (put on some slicks).

Can you guys push me toward one of these two bikes? I know you don't know any more about me than what you've read here, but what would you do if you were me? I've read the threads arguing FS vs. HT, and I still can't make up my mind.

Are you going to race, because I think that unless you're doing some type of urban/street freeriding business a full suspension mtb is never necessary for any type of road riding. Now if it won't see much road use and you don't mind paying the price then that full suspension is a better bike, all around. Also, I don't know how old you are but a lot of people who are older (40+) seem to prefer the full suspension.

I realize FS is not at all necessary for the road. I thought it would be good for poorly maintained trails. Trail riding will be its primaray use, but I will be riding on pavement when with my wife/family.

I guess what I'm asking is - is there ANY reason I should stay away from the FS? I'm willing to bust the budget, the FS weighs less than .5 lb more than the HT, and it has lockout. Any general opinions on either bike are welcome! It's a lot of dough either way, and I don't want to be wasting it.

well cant point you in any direction but.. i just picked up a hardrock comp and took it out for its first trail ride yesterday and i rode it hard.. this bike is built tough. worked out sooo nice in the bush im impressed and dont regret my purchase at all
