Mountain Biking - Regular platform pedals on a MTB

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Dumb idea? OK, if one prefers? What do you think?

Why weird. I don't run clipless. Lots of riders don't :) go for it.
DMR V8's. You know you want too.

Speend the bucks and get some Syncros Mentals. :D

You'd have to be mental to spend that much on some platforms pedals.

Well I have never been accused of being sane :D but it does help if you can get a sweet deal.

Fair enough. If you can then why not.

I really like these primo's that came with both the used bikes I bought, so evidently my previous owner's did too. They're cheap as well.

i work at a bike shop and 4 out of 5 of us use platforms.
the mentals are kinda a specialized type of pedal. my co-worker bought a pair and promptly went back to his haro pedals. he thought that they were way to crazy for trail riding and they were tearing through the back of his mace shin guards. he's keeping them for his future freeride bike tho.
There's always a combo pedal. One side clipless, one side platform. Or Crank Bros. Mallets which has platforms on both sides, along with egg beaters.
I'm not a big fan of the combo pedals and even the large-platform clipless pedals aren't all that great without clipless shoes. I just switch out my clipless pedals for platforms if I know what I'll be doing would best be done with platforms.

Yes you can...
Have you ever tried to ride dh/urban/fr with clipless? It's suicide IMO. Gotts be able to ditch the bike quickly.

Heh, my friend goes downhilling on a '03 Kona Shred with clipless. He screwed up on a rut just the other week and ended up on his bakc with the bike on top of him, still attached to his bike. Classic at the time. :D

AFace, if your co-worker wants to use the Mentals now Syncros has less damaging pins available. The new pins are shorter with pointed tips rather then the soccer style the pedals come with.

What kind of used bikes did you buy, BMX or MTB?

One bmx and one mtb. The bmx was a flybikes diablo, and the mtb is a azonic steelhead.

CX I'd use clips\clipless, the more nasty the offroad, the more the safety factor on being able to toss or put a foot down becomes.
Racing on XC, single track ...maybe. Ya!
I'd be a mess with them, and some places I ride, no way, bad idea.
Tried, I do like the energy conservation -But self preservation won out.

DMR V12's - Grippy as you like and really smooth bearings.

I'm too chicken**** to run clippless at this point. My ALD has a set of 25 dollar DKs which I guess are the type you are talking about.

Applesauce. I run http://img120.exs.cx/img120/5408/odysseysouthgate.jpgOdyssey Southgates (http://www.speedgoat.com/product.asp?part=42089&cat=240&brand=176) on my trail bike and Time Control Z's on my commuter.

How is it that you can spell you correctly one time but you can't the second time in the same sentence fragment? Is it laziness? AOL'ese is frowned upon here newb. I suggest you stop for your own sake.
I run platform pedals also. I dont think I'll ever go clipless.
Btw Raiyn I'd suggest you stop using the term AOL'ese, you sould like a little 15 year old "OH NO LOLOL AOL'ESE ROFL STOP NOW EVERYONE LOL"

At least I can spell "sound". AOL'ese or HaX0r or 'internet shorthand or whatever you want to call it is against the forum guidelines. If you want to read that sort of crap you need to go over to mountainbike.com's forum or spend some time in the BMX section here.

I have a question for you Raiyn, do you even know what AOL'ese means, because I don't think you do.
Here is a prime example of AOL'ese at its best. (no I didn't type that)
"hEy gUrL iM A sk8Er bOi aNd iM sTuPiD as hELL cAuSe i cAnt eVeN wRiTe cOrrEcTlY mUcH lEss rEaD mY gRaMMer suks BTW aNd i dUnno wHat pUncUaTioN is OMG LOLOLOLOLZ~~~!!!1 hEy do u hAve tHe neWeSt cd oF tHe bAnd wE luv sO mUcH OMG LOLOLOLOL~~~!!!1 ur cool lolz hEy i g2g ttyl cya byez OMG LOLOLOL~~~!!!1"
Anyway, back onto my ignore list you go, just had to set you straight.

ANY instance of AOL'ese I catch gets noted. For the record it doesn't have to be as extreme as the example you provided. If you let it get a foot hold it will quickly degenerate into what your example implies. There is no reason for it to be used here as this is not a real time chat and people can take all the time they need to compose a well thought out reply. There's no reason to post like you're typing with one hand because you have lotion on the other one or something

Please do your best when it comes to grammar, punctuation and spelling. Excessive use of "AOL'ese" and "hAx0r" talk can be very disruptive so please keep it to a minimum.

Fortunately I am not on your ignore list. Read the guidelines again please.
Hi MTBers,
I run half-clips without straps in order to keep feet from going off front of pedals. Side exits are automatic.
Do feet slip off front of platform pedals (bmx or pinned pedals) occasionally and when?
What kinds of shoes work well with platform pedals?

What kinds of shoes work well with platform pedals?
Vans with the original style "waffle" sole are about the most grippy I've ever found. Had some airwalks that were real nice once, but they wore out quickly.
Occasionally you do slip off, but for the most part it's a non issue. If you put any real pressure on the pedal the pins will dig in to the tread of your shoes. The only times I've slipped on my pedals would be in instances when I was going to be dabbing or over correcting

go with the kona jack ****s. they are sweet pedals, with so much grip they put holes in flat bottomd shoes (bmx or skateboard types). but if u need to let go you dont have to clip out. i have similar pedals on my bike, but my neighbor has jack ****s. i need to get myself a set.
P.S.: yeh raiyn i know i swore but its the name of the pedals, wut can i say

I have the Jacksh!t pedals...they suck. The pins keep coming loose or falling out, this has been a problem with Kona for awhile now. Wellgo all the way!

I could give a **** about the language (the censor thing handles that) it's the AOL'ese I can't stomach. Knock it off this is the third thread I've had a beef with you on this in. My patience is growing thin

i thought the best made were jack ****s, but as madbiker told me the pins get loose. i got myself some wellgo's they stick better than jack ****s and the spikes are molded to the pedal rather than screwed in. also they are huge and u never loose grip.
u .
How many times do I have to tell you Y-O-U not "u" NO AOL'ESE
I use Odyssey Southgates (http://www.speedgoat.com/product.asp?part=42089&cat=240&brand=176) on my trail bike and I've never been happier. No fuss no muss. Pins that grip, bearings that run smooth, it's a good thing.

I also have a pair of DK Iron Crosses laying around those served me well until I went to clipless on that bike. Those were some soild pedals.

what are the best platform pedals you have ever had?
These Mental (http://www.syncros.com/pedals.htm) . They are the best pedal made but they will cost you. I have had the ss ones now for a year and they still feel new even after numerous bashings aginst bolders, trees, concrete and just about any other solid surface you may encounter while riding including my skull :D (that one stung for a day or two).
A question for the wellgo people: Which type? the "mountain bike" ones or the "BMX/DH" model? I'm new to this, and I'm using some cheap road platforms that are sharp enough to eat my shins, but not sharp enough to keep my feet from slipping.
Wellgo makes pedals in all ranges from cheap pieces of Dookie to some rather nice pedals.
I'll say it again. I like these

DMR V12's are fantastic. The V8's are the same platform so in theory just as good, but the bearings aren't as smooth, hence there's a slight price drop. Wellgo make copies of the design, but when I had a pair they didn't last long at all. Another plus point is that they come in pretty much any colour you want.
Wellgo make a pretty good pair of cheap sealed pedals, Mosh branded ones are the same. Personally I'd avoid the unsealed Southgates, the sealing is a joke.

I ran clipless for years and switched back to Platforms. I bought a set of Truvative Holzfellers.
Slipping pedals is just one of those things you deal with. It happens. But when you need to bail, it's instantaneous!

I use Sun Ringle ZuZu's. Nice pedal, lots of grip, tear holes in my shines, work well.
