So today was/is my birthday, since I got the day off I decided I needed to run up to work and go find out what time I work tomorrow so I run up there I lock my bike up with just a cheapo lock that I use for a quick 5 min errand. So I go to the break room and look up my time for tomorrow, come back out and my bike is gone  my cheapo lock (chain + pad lock) is cut and laying on the ground. I ask around to see if anyone saw anything and wouldn't you know it the one day nobody pays attention! So not only did my bike get jacked (my only way around) but I just got a trainer for when I can't go out and ride, and I also got some other bike gear! It has so been the worst birthday ever!

/end rant

Damn... someone's been eye'ing your thing. U should always keep a strong lock and chain at work.
At least you now have an excuse to buy a new bike. :)

Yes I have the number, no it wasn't insuranced, the reason I used my cheapo lock was cause I was inside for no more than 5 mins...usally I lock it with a Mini U-Lock plus a cable lock...

This is pure Sh*T. I hope the devil that jacked your bike has bad, bad karma for the next 50 years.
I am so sorry! What a crappy birthday. (hope next year is better)

That really does suck. I hope your birthday was good otherwise, and that this means that you've gotten all of your bad luck for the next year out of the way early!

You (or if you live with someone... they) don't have insurance (homeowners or renters). If you did, you could definitely file a claim.

I am in no way trying to do the "blame the victim" thing here, just curious as I do a similar thing when locking up if I'll only be a few minutes...

Elvish: what is the reason you use your cheap lock for short periods of time? Is it to save carrying multipe heavy locks on your trip? To save time whilst locking up?

I use a chain and padlock if I'm just going into a shop for a few minutes, but if I might be delayed or if I can't see the bike from the window I'll use a cable and padlock as well as a mini-U in addition to the chain. This saves me carrying two extra locks as well as reducing the time I spend locking up, but I'm thinking I should make the extra effort to secure my bike more thoroughly - especially in the places where I lock up regularly.

Sucks to hear about your bike being stolen, hopefully you'll get it back, but we all know how small the chances of that are.

That sucks man. I had that happen in college... of course I never got the bike back. They didn't even leave the lock. I seem to recall you saying you lived with family? Do they have homeowners insurance? The deductible's usually like 250 or something so your bike would have to cost more than that, but it's worth a shot (be sure to add up all your accessories, lights, fenders, rack, anything that was attached... oh yeah, lock too!). Make sure to specify when talking to the company that it was locked, but DON'T say it was a cheapo lock, you don't want to encourage them to blame you. Oh and you might need a police report for the insurance company.
