If you like road riding, get a road bike. Or you can throw slicks on your dads MTB if you haven't already. Otherwise, mtb for mountain biking obviously :D

If you always ride on pavement, try a road bike before buying. Mt. bikes might be "in," but they're so damn hard to push.

1) How much money do you have. Obviously, thats a huge factor.
2) what kind of riding? Trails, road or a bmx style?

No matter what style you go with, try a lot of different ones out...sometimes some just feel much better. The geometry/shape of the bike makes a huge difference...even when they are slight.

When I was looking I went through 20 or more bike shops and more than that bike styles and a few times "almost" settled until I found one that just felt like it fit like a glove.

Depending on what type of riding you'll do, you may want to consider a "comfort" bike like I did. I thought it was a good entry level bike for one who wasn't sure what type of riding he'd like best and what his riding level would be. They are not "best" for either road riding or trail riding, but work decent for either. They are great for road and trail riding, just not "the best".

Now that I decided what type of riding I like better, one day I'll go and get a better bike of the style I ride most.
