Great board!
I found this board looking for information on commuting. I'm taking a job in Austin, TX and will be living 4.8 miles from work. There is a bus, but I want to get a bike for health/well-being. (Plus, parking is tricky.) Currently, I live in Ohio and drive 40 minutes (20 miles) each way to work, and I just resent being tied to my car. So I'm looking forward to getting to work under my own power!
Welcome!
You should definitely look at our brand new, Living Car Free forum. It could be exactly what you're looking for.

Welcome, Spinsterella!! I think you will enjoy commuting a lot. There's a lot of good information on these forums about commuting - that's how I found this page, too. I commute 7 miles (one way) 4 days per week. I takes me a half hour from door to door. That's a little longer than if I drove, but I remember my ride in to work all day (I never remembered my drive to work), and by the time I get home, I've forgotten about work! It's at least as good for my head as it is my heart.
Welcome Spinsterella aka "new commuter". ;)
If you haven't commuted before, there are loads of great ideas, tips, and suggestions in the Commuting forum.

I envy you. I currently took a job with a long commute (50 miles each way, ouch!) requiring me to drive again. Riding to work is a great way to start the day and transition out of work mode on the way home. Enjoy the healthy lifestyle as well as knowing you are doing something positive for our planet. Good for you!

Welcome Paul.
Sounds like it's time to move or change jobs. ;)

Its my first job out of grad school so I'm willing to sacrifice and my Honda gets great gas mileage. I've been fortunate enough to be able to commute by bike for the last 5 years or so...Now I'm guess I'll make up for lost car time.....Atleast they are giving me 2 weeks off to be able to do my first bike tour. 2 weeks on 2 wheels from Humbolt county, CA to Big Sur...I can't wait.

Man, I'm envious of that, right now!
