General Cycling Discussion - "Campus" type pedals (Anyone use them)

These are the pedals that have the clip on one side and platform on the other. I thinking of going that route on my comfort bike, then full clipless on my roadie (when I buy one). I was wondering how people feel about the campus pedal (likes/dislikes)

When I could still make use of clipless (achilles tendonitis now prohibits :( ), I had exactly this type of pedal. I loved it - you get the best of both worlds. I highly recommend.

I use them on my Specialized Crossroads Sport (Hybrid). I like them a lot.

For some of the SPD models, you can get a plastic platform that just snaps on, with the same result.

I have these and the problem I've found is that they squeak after a while. I'm going to get some that are full metal so there won't be any more squeaking.

I got SPD sandals instead. They're nice.

the one piece are better than the platform snapons, if you don't mind the minimal extra weight. the one piece are more indestructible.

My father in law has them on his full DA road bike because he likes to grab the bike and go get coffee without having to find his shoes :D And yes, I'm serious.

I have them on my commuter. I almost always use the SPDs, but the platform side comes in handy from time to time, such as when I let someone else ride it.

I had 'em on my first bike, a Giant Sedona hybrid. Actually, the only time they were used was when letting someone else try the bike. My intent was to use the bike with platforms for short errands in street clothes. Never happened. Always ended up riding in bike shoes and clipping in.

So, in typical fashion, I can not get through to Performance Bike's 800 number. Is it standard to include the cleats with the pedals? My LBS has some hi-end pedals that come with the cleats, but I am not buying them. I was wondering if the cleats come with the pedals or the shoes.

If you don't have shoes yet, you should at least consider one of the various shoe/pedal combos, which I think save you even more money.

Many pedals include cleats as a part of the package.

They do include cleats. I got them when my absolutely worthless stock pedals were worn smooth, on the theory that I can ease my way into riding clipless. Well I haven't gotten around to getting shoes yet, but I can tell you that the platform side works great.

FWIT, I have them on my C-dale touring bike, I love em. Usually ride clipped in with shoes, but it's nice if I just want to pedal over to the general store or something without putting the bike shoes back on. (I like to let them air out at the end of a day, wear some river sandels around the camp site.)

I got them because much of my commute is uphill and until I get stronger, I'm less paranoid climbing when I'm not clipped in. I really like them, too. I wear them with SPD-compatible sandals.

I have them on my Allez, and my wife has them on her recumbent. They are simple, and I think they are a great move for someone that is intimidated by the idea of going clipless. They work fine. and provide a decent sized platform in case you miss getting clipped in. Not high performance, but very functional.

I had them as my first clipless pedals. Since then, they've been on every bike I own and are now on my commuter, which is an ideal use for them.

I was always happy with them, although as mentioned above, they do tend to get squeaky.

atac z-control, that way you don't have to worry about which side of the pedal you are on. or the crank brothers mallet has the same design, a nice platform with a clip in the middle, use it or don't.
Also, they look much cooler, and are tougher.

Cleats come with the pedals. The shoe company doesn't know what kind of pedals you're going to buy.

I have Shimano campus pedals on my commuter. I really like them.

Same here. Love mine. Great for longer rides, practical for short trips to the store.

Just a quick question from a curious Swede: why are they called "campus" pedals, were they meant for college use only or is it something else entirely?
