Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - my first wife (pics)

Just wanted to share the crazy handlebar set-up that I did for my wife's bike. The bars are cut-off drops that I used for awhile as stubby bullhorns. She decided she wanted them to use like this. I was hesitant at first, but I think it looks kinda cool now...

This was my first attempt at wrapping tape also...

Looks great! Is the brake cable that long for a reason?

She is riding fixed. There's a freewheel on the other side, I put on in case she didn't like fixed. Naturally though, after one ride, she never looked back, and the freewheel has never been used.

The brake cable is long because there were these wide drops on the before. I didn't bother to actually re-run the brakes. Yet.

The tape should go under the hood, but nice job. What lever is that? The Nashbar Aero lever? I've been curious about that lever.... I could probably use the extra set of hoods that come with it on some other levers too.

I like the look of those stubby bars. I also like the the way the tape matches the tires. Looks wonderful.

If you run a small piece (like 3 inches) of tape perpendicular to those bars where the brake lever ring wraps around the bars, the tape job will look better and last longer. (Just cover the little metal ring with a piece of tape, then wrap the bars normally.)

I wish I could get my woman to ride fixed. She's such a whimp.

That's a really sweet ride. How much did it cost for that whole set up?

i rode that setup for a few years; until i found a northroad in the trash. more positions on the northroads.

btw - put another lever on the right-side and you have a thrid hand position.

yeah, quite a reach on that lever.

you may want to look into a set of nashbar top-mount cross levers. they work wonderfully with standard road brakes, as well as old-school mountain cantilevers.

and shorten that cable! please.. im losing sleep over it.. oh yea.. and like someone said but didnt explain.. when taping hood.. peel the hood back.. tape around the clamp and then put the hood back down.. most people cut a short piece of tape to cover the clamp and then tape an "X" over it to hold it in place.. then theres no metal showing..

oh.. one more thing.. i think the bars look cool..i wouldnt care about the cable and tape if i didnt

We rode all day yesterday with 2 brakes on there, but she decided she didn't want them both.

I may put one of those lever brakes on there. It was a quick fix for now. She hasn't complained about the reach. And besides, she rarely uses the brake.

i would say maybe angle the ends down a bit (at least they look like they slant down a little now) so there is a slight drop from the flat part to the ends of the curves. might make a more comfy handhold??

I'm going to take a wild guess and say it's and IRO.

I ran some cut-down Moscows like that with some BMX grips for a day, I just couldn't get comfortable. Maybe because of the drop (or rise), maybe I just had them at the wrong angle (kept moving them round though, so I don't know). I've never had more sore hands after a ride than when I rode that set-up. But of course that's not to say it won't work for everyone. I think it looks cool, especially with the purple tyres.
