Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - wheel set for surly steamroller?

kinda new to the fixed gear thing, and i just got a surly steamroller and need to buy some 700c rims, any suggestions? i want a flip flop hub but am open with that too. suggestions for tires? thanks

Regarding tires, I have just started riding with a Continental Grand Prix 4 Season in front and a Specialized Armadillo All Condition in back.
This combination really works for me, giving me a strong climb, low rolling-resistance, super flat protection, comfort and great handling.
Yes, expensive: about $70 for the pair; but worth it to me.

Don't buy a flip-flop, get a fix-fix hub. You can still run freewheels on both sides if you want to, but have the option of fixing both sides if you want to. I think the Surly hub is a good entry level one, and that's not just because they supplied the beer on Saturday's ride. You'll probably want to change out the bearings to something a little better (stock ones seem to go bad fairly often) but other than that it's a good solid hub.

As far as rims, I dunno. Velocity's proven themselves to be a pretty stand up company on this board, but I've never ridden them, so I can't say. Whatever looks pretty on your bike?

And tires? I'm not even going to open that can of worms. There are so many that it's pointless. Depends on the roads you ride, the clearance on the bike you're building, and your own personal preferance. I've ran everything from cyclocross tires to folding racing tires that matched my paint, depending on the conditions or bike...

i ride a steamroller with the QBP stock MA3/surly wheelset. They're fine, and have held up well after a year of curb-hopping and some odd alleycat stunts.

My dream wheelset, which I'm building in the next few weeks, is Phil high-flange (with the cutouts) hubs laced to Velocity Deep-V rims.

Depending on your budget, there are plenty of good rims to choose from.

Mavic Open Pro
Ambrosio Excellence
Mavic CXP 33
DRC ST17

Although we don't currently deal with Velocity, I have ridden them and they are also good rims (and from what I've seen, EXCELLENT customer satisfaction)

IRO, or Miche as a good intermediate hubset. Going any lower quality in my opinion will cost you more in the long run in repairs and replacements.

DA, Level Components, Phil or Campy are all amazing choices for the high end Hubs

not so sure surly hubs are a good recommendation at all........ heard lots of stories about their flawed design. Good frame choice, I just built up my steamroller and couldn't be happier with it. I think it really comes down to how much you are willing to spend.

1 He builds with Velocity deep vs on his deluxe set.
2 His hubs can now be had fixed/fixed.

ici, another thing which tony has now is black hubs, and therefore the option of an all black wheelset. I believe at the moment he is out of stock, but maybe in a week or two.

All black+ fix/fix = good.

I ride a Steamroller with Velocity dish wheels and hubs. Strong, reliable, smooth, good lookin, and an easy company to deal with.
