Hi! Anyone know if there are any Mixte light weight frames? I have a Peogoet 103 carbolite and wonder if I could find a lighter frame. Also- are sachs-hurett derailers a good choice. Thanks

I've seen some very nice Mixte frames, Colnago's, Nishikis, and other
better Peugoets. There was a very nice Cinelli womens frame (not mixte)
recently on e-bay.
Have no idea on the Sachs componetry I'll leave that to the other guy.

My wife's Centurion LeMans mixte weighs in at 19 lbs.

I have a Fuji B12 and its light. I wish I could tell you what just the frame weighs. With all the components Its around 24-25 lbs.

I have an old Fuji Dynamic 10, and it seems to be lightweight. Well, let's put it this way....it's lighter than my Schwinn Varsity, but then again, there aren't that many out there that aren't lighter than my VarsityTank! ;-)

There are many great mixte frames out there. Makers included Puch, Peugeot, Raleigh and Schwinn (though the Schwinn frames were not what I consider “mixte”). My wife rides a Peugeot mixte and my 8 year old daughter rides a Kuwahara mixte with 24” wheels. Mercian still builds a premier and classic design mixte frame.

Another maker was Bridgestone. I have "Carmel" mixte that I ride
from time to time. Really a nice smooth bike. My wife asked me to
change the tires on it to knobbies for tail riding . She says it's
very easy to ride on crushed limestone trails we ride on now.

I have a Bottechia mixte ... it's a singlespeed now and very light (I haven't weighed it tho for an exact number). circa 1970.

I'll probably be struck by lightning for saying so, but those are not the most elegant mixte frames I've ever seen. And whoever selected the typeface for the downtubes ought to be shot.

Here's another:

The Sultan always has lots of cool vintage stuff.

I think you'll be okay as long as you don't post those comments on the IBOB list.

Yeah, but those are the folks that have recently been discussing how beneficial it would be to go shoeless forever and for all time. There was even one guy recently who was lamenting that he paid way too little in taxes, and that gas should be >$5.00 a gallon so that everyone would see the benefit of cycling everywhere they had to go.

Those folks are a bit..... different.....

The Mixte is just one of types of cross frames developed in
the late 1800s. Thefirst bicycle to be called a cross frame was the
"Premier" in 1886, made by the (British) Hillman, Herbert & Cooper in 1886.
Here is a page from an old cycling design book (1901) with various
cross frames.
everything old is new again.

If anyone is interested (arcane area discussion, i know)
here's a link to a discussion (in english) of
Dutch cross frames (where the attachment came from).

There is something not quite right about these frames. Let me say I have a great appreciation for Rivendell, but I have to reluctantly agree with you, mswantak. While I'm sure they ride and function in a comfortable and superior way, they just don't look right. The lugs are trying too hard and the saddles and bars look out of proportion to the rest of the bike. Nevertheless, I like Rivendell and deeply appreciate their nonconformist attitudes, their sense of style and appreciation of common sense function over the vacant innovations du jour.

;) Thanks to all who responded to my mixte frame question. My LBS said for my type of riding, be satisfied with my peugoet and spend my money on upgrading the componets! The weight difference won't mean much unless I start riding long distances or touring. Interesting enough, A bike like mine is going for 100 bucks on ebay, all original and clean.
I'll be looking for a 39t inner chain ring to fit my Nevar crank. They say a few were made and are quite rare. My desire is to be able to pump a 39/21 combo, may never get there, but there is hope! ride, ride, ride!!!!

Kogswell (www.kogswell.com) has a beautfiful mixte frameset for $330. It's set-up as a singlespeed/fixed-gear if that's your thing.

My favourite mixte was the Turnberg. While the design was not as light and strong as a standard mixte, the unique design for the bi-lateral stays gave it a little more character and was more reminescent of traditional female designs.

Just had to share this Toei mixte with you. Check out the braze-ons for center-pulls. Now that is a nice mixte!

Thank-you for posting Noah. It is a thing of beauty! Have you checked out the Austro-Daimler Vent Noir miste on Classic Rendezvous? http://www.classicrendezvous.com/Austria/AD_V_Noir.htm

Very nice... it is the first bike I remember seeing with side-pull (front) and center-pull combination.
