Foo - Strange car trend.

Has anyone else noticed the growing number of cars that have license plates mounted off of the intended spot for them? Sometimes they are even crooked. Personally I think it looks horrible because there is still a spot molded into the car where license plates are supposed to be screwed into. And this is on old and new cars.

Any idea where this came from? Perhaps it's just in SW Florida heh.

Are you talking about the riceboys who stick their license plates in the window because they're too cool to legally affix it to the mounting holes?

I've also seen license plates relocated for legit reasons such as on vehicles with a spare tyre carrier off the rear that would otherwise impede sight of the plate.

I believe it began in the "mini-truck" crowd. Looks ********.

I saw one this week mounted on an SUV spare tire cover. Unfortunately it was upside-down.

This isn't my opinion but I was told by someone I worked with that placing the plate in the back window stemmed from the urban areas. Apparently it makes it easier to remove the plate from the car while it's parked to prevent theft of the plate.

No the plates aren't in the back window, though I've seen that as well. These are people who actually drilled holes and installed the plate elsewhere on the car, such as the trunk.

Hmm, I never thought of it as a problem in the 'States, but one of my armed forces plates got stolen in Germany when I was stationed over there. The MP's said that people would steal cars and take them through Checkpoint Charlie by installing stolen plates so they wouldn't get stopped.

I've seen lots of plates in rear windows lately, but not many mounted in alternate locations.
