are my shimano deore shifters any good? i've got them on my new bike and dont really want to trade them out. I want to make sure they are ok quality though.

They are fine. They will serve you well. I had thoughts of upgrading my Deore's to XT but didn't and they have served me well. Wear em' out!!!

i had them on my aline for a while, it worked prety well untill i bent my derailur. dont replace untill you break them, if and when you do switch to SRAM much better then shimano. i have X.7 and i love them

Back to your question. I run Deore on my hardtail. The only other thing I did to them was black out the displays as the needles no longer work properly. It wasn't worth the time to fix or remove them so I masked them off and zapped the windows with black spray paint

Deore works fine. It may not be fancy but does what it is supposed to do.

Was there a point in doing this? I hardly ever look at the displays, but i really wouldnt go to the trouble of blacking them out if they didnt work. Just curious...

Because they'd work fine one minute and then they wouldn't the next. It was just aggravating to my perfectionist nature so rather than take the things apart and fix it, I masked them off and zapped them with some spray paint It was worth the 10 minutes total to mask them on the bars. Chances are the indicator has worked just fine since I did that, but it's a moot point to me. I just like everything to work perfectly and since it was pointless to try and fix them as they have no real mechanical effect on the bike I blacked them out.
