Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Who enjoys riding through nyc late at night?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Is just me, or is there something amazing about riding around the city late at night. This is mainly due to the fact that I get off of work anwhere betw. 11pm-4am, and I usually need to get ride just to relax my myself. Most of the time I look forward to traffic(like how are you going to get through this grid lock today), but there is something amazing about having the streets almost all to yourself. After coming of a hit and run with a taxi(on my old peugot fix), and many everyday close calls which every rider goes through, this would be something enjoyable for most, especially the fixed community.

Sounds cool, but since I live over 3,000 miles away, riding through nyc at night is a longshot. I did enjoy the video of 'the big dig' in Boston.
Absolutely. I live a fairly short walk from work, so I tend to go for my rides at night after I've gotten home... just did a nice short cruise from the EVil up 1st Ave home... Quiet, no traffic. The ride down there earlier -- jeez... I think the heat has done something to drivers. Almost got myself kilt!

nope not just you...tis a whole nother world...i go out sometimes when i cant sleep. I am in philly but whatever...theres noone on streets that a few hours ago there was traffic, people double parking everywhere etc
also its a fascinating viewpoint..you notice things that you other wise wouldnt notice just by the nature of the fact that everythigns lit up and theres noone else out..
Use to go to school in philly, and that was interesting town to ride in. Especially the art museum area, and south philly, way past the stadium.
another one in philly. love love love midnight rides. the city is at its most beautiful at night. less traffic, lower temps, perfect.
I think as we all know that city starts to close by about 9pm(at least a couple of years back), so even by that time most commuters have already left the city.

A couple of weeks ago, I took my friend from out of town on a ride from my lady's place on Central Park North south to 59th st., then Park Ave. Park Ave. is fantastic at night or on week-ends because it's freshly paved every year. Anyway, in the dark, we shot up through the Grand Central tunnel and circled Grand Central Station, came out the other end and rode to Union Square where we stopped for some beers. From there, we went down Broadway to Kenmare/Delancey and then crossed the Williamsburg bridge, rode home. My friend continues to describe it as 'one of the coolest things he's ever done.' And this was after he just got back from 7 mos. living on the Amazon. I love riding at night--it's how I got used to the fixie on the streets.

nyc at night is sick.
i love biking/skating down broadway. there's a slight downhill grade all the way to canal, then a tiny uphill to city hall, then more down hill all the way to the SI ferry. it's so fun going out with a few friends and cruising down broadway.
i also love it during rush hour for different reasons all together ;)

i agree its beautiful city at night to ride through. as lame as it sounds one of my favorite memories will be during the halloween critical mass riding through times square and looking at all the tourist and bright lights on my bicycle with fellow riders. i don't think i'll ever have that feeling again.
on another note, i built up a new bike and did some laps late in prospect park last night with some other ladies. it was totally different feeling while riding (well besides the drunk guy on a bicycle who swerved in front of us) i love new york city.
yes the city is much prettier at night. ya can't see the dirt.
for some reason the scenery goes by quicker. less stuff to run over/into.
that night air feels great on the skin.
hey nyc, so when we gonna have our midnite alleycat? :)

Isn't it great now?! I love that fresh pavement. Last time I was on flushing was in the fall, and I was trying to finish a 12-mile run over all the torn up street that they were prepping for re-paving.
Better get our rides in before the trucks tear the cr@p out of it.

one problem with flushing is that since it's so nice and smooth and relatively traffic-free with the navy yard on the west, people use it as a drag strip late at night.
dudes in pimped-out hondas drive 80 mph down flushing in the middle of the night.
i'm occasionally seeing cops sitting on the side streets to catch speeders, but it's still scary.
back in march when much of it was paved (but the bqe intersection was still a total mess), i had a really nice late night ride in a light snow. so quiet.

you're bringing this to a whole new level now. riding at night and having a few flakes falling is like nothing else. i like fog too, but light snow really does it for me.

Oooh, fog in the flatiron district? Best weather ever.
this maybe shameless promotion for a friends band, but go here www.purevolume.com/armsoforion and listen to the song "ride or die." it is about riding bikes. i think it captures that night ride feeling quite well! :)
That's what I'm talkin about right there. This is for all of the creatures of the night. We just need to find a place to meet. Hell if anyone sees me riding late at night feel free to come along. Look for a older black bianchi track(with sea foam green lettering), and the worlds skinniest drop bars.
I am so ready an alleycat late at night as well. More so than usual can own the streets. If anyone wants to help organize such a thing that would be amazing. If no one wants to do so, I can attempt it. Funny how i can jump from late night rides, to trying to get an alleycat together, but it's all riding at night, and hat's the great parts. Anyone interested in the alleycat, please respond.
