General Cycling Discussion - Meeting?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was just thinking about all the people on the forum that I've been communicating with, and I wonder if we'll ever try to have a mass get together. Maybe talk about our different cycling interests, go do some cycling, maybe even get newbies to riding a mentor who they can hang with and ride with and get tips on technique and form.... get together for some serious riding... and I mean all of the people from all of the different forums congregating. What is the likelihood that Joe can arrange for this? I'd be very willing to help organize and pick a site and get everyone coordinated! And I pick either Canada, Seattle, anyplace in Colorado, or San Diego as a meeting point.

I'm also open to other countries too....

I think you just want to get out of Chicago!
I vote for Winnepeg in Canada or Las Vegas (The bike show is in October) or Corpus Christie, TX. --but not in the summer. Spring or Fall.

Perhaps we could do a poll here, and the place with the most votes, we can make some plans for either fall (preferable) or late spring. It can be like a woodstock of cycling....

Come to Australia. Great cycling conditions here.

Agreed. Here on the Gold Coast right now we are confronted with temperatures in the low 20s celsius pretty much day and night. Might be best to get here before the water runs out though.
Incidentally, meetings have already happened. I went for a ride with Cabledonut here a couple of months back, and I rode with Allister (who seems to have mysteriously disappeared) last year.

I will be in Winnepeg in 2 weeks time. Toronto would not be a good place while the garbage collectors are on strike and the temperature is 25-30C. Montreal is currently covered by a blanket of smoke from forest fires 500 km N of here.

ok so do it in thornhill, 30min north of Toronto, we got garbage pickup.
I am NOT going to the States. Won't be able to hear anyone speak over the gunfire down there.
What about Nova Scotia, east coast of Canada? We'll ride the Annapolis Valley! We'll eat lobster, pick strawberries, swim in the ocean, and not have to dodge bullets like the States.
Won't be able to hear anyone speak over the gunfire down there.Hey, come on down to TEXAS we'll fix
your hearing problem.
Digger, you ever been to the states, or are you just
repeating all the bull**** that you've ever heard?
Marty
Been there, didn't hear any gunfire I admit.
But my wife's cousin, who has a house here, and who was born and raised in Arizona, checks his gun at the border when he visits during the summer.
ooooo the shivers up and down my spine when I think of that place.
BUT I'd better be careful what I say, they might send up the F-18s to take this place out. :D
Seriously....
I spoke to Joe, and it will probably be too late to have one this year. We're thinking perhaps in the spring. In all honestly and likelihood, it wouldn't be in Australia. I've been there too, and through my sister's marriage, we have kin in Melbourne and Perth, so I know it's a great place, but the majority of people who seem to post are on the North American continent. The prices to get to Australia even in the off season would bankrupt us. So I'm not thinking that would be in the works. Europe is not that bad. Sometimes the prices to Europe from the USA are cheaper than the prices for travelling from the midwest to California, so I could see Europe. But Australia.... that's a bit of a stretch....
So I think what I'll do is do a poll on all the forums and see where the places are people would like to go for the late spring and then let's see if we can pull it off for the first annual bikeforums "convention".

South Florida is nice in the late spring.I bet you could even convince people to met here in the winter or early spring. There is a good base of members here and the rides along the coast or in the central part of the state are excellant.
Will wearing of the BF jersey be mandatory?
No, but it may get you much love from the forum creator.....
;)

I say gather in NYC and visit ground zero & ride the 5 boroughs.

koffee-
there seems to be a healthy amount of people here from chicago and surrounding areas. maybe a mini-get together to get things started!
Hmmmmmm..... sounds like a good idea. I will have more time to work on this next week, so let me think about it and post some dates and places for a mini-meeting. With all the people from the midwest that post here, it could definitely turn into something!

hey this city wasn't built from winners money :D
I'll second Nova Scotia. I toured up there a few years ago. It's wonderful, and around Halifax it has a very European flavor. The people were friendly and the motorists, when on the road, were very courteous. They did not once try to run me off the road or yell at me, and most of the time waved as they went past.
It was completely different when I returned to Bar Harbor, Maine via the Ferry from NS. I wasn't on the road twenty seconds when some jerk honked, yelled and tried to run me into a stone wall. I blew him a kiss, a smile and gave him a finger salute while saying to my self, "Welcome home." Wishing I were still in Nova Scotia. I think that destination should be given a serious consideration.
Vegas Cyclist, I'll be in LV for the bike show in October, but don't think I can take you up on the offer of "Vegas hospitality" because I'll be staying with my daughter, my grand daughter and great grand son. But thank you for the offer. It is quite generous.
(Normal hospitality is $500. in chips, Free room and board and all the scotch I can drink with tickets to every big show thrown in, Right? That is difficult to pass up, but I'm not sure my family would understand; especially since I only get out there every two years.)
