General Cycling Discussion - Helmet visors - does anyone use them?

I have one on my helmet and I was wondering if anyone actually uses it, I do sometimes, but sometimes I also remove it, what purpose does the visor serve anyway?

If I were sitting uprite riding my cruiser on a sunny day I would clip mine on. When Im riding my other bikes with lower bars I find that the visor tends to get in the way a bit and causes me to wrench my neck back a bit more than I like.

I like mine when up in some trails. I can just look down and not get smacked in the face by a branch.

I have two helmets - one MTB helmet with a removeable visor, and one road helmet without visor. On my roadie, I never use the visor - gives me a sore neck having to tilt my head back far enough to see past the visor. On the MTB, I usually use it - kinda handy for sun blocking. On my commuter (cyclocross) I usually leave the visor on and mount a mirror to it. The cross bike is upright enough to make the visor ok.

I have a Bell Ukon which came with a visor. At first I liked it for the shade, but realized it was forcing me to hold my head up higher than before just to see the road ahead and causing neck pain. For my last ride I removed the visor and felt much less neck pain.

I find that it significantly shades my eyes on hot days and provides more protection for my contacts. I started wearing one for mtnbiking only and then liked it enough to wear on the road. However, if you have a long steep hill, it can be a literal pain in the neck since you have to keep your head tilted up higher. If I ride a long out and back hill climb, I'll pull off the the visor and stick in it my pocket for the descent.

I do for a couple of reasons. First, it provides a little extra sun blockage during the day. Second, I can tilt my head down riding at night, and it helps keep the bugs out of my eyes. I always wear glasses, although with the humidity being what it is now, my clearn lenses seem to fog up pretty often.

I have the same helmet, and share the same feelings.
I was cool at first, but later removed it due to neck strain.

I always ride with mine on. I don't use the drops much, so the neck issue has never been an issue for me. I'd rather have a little extra shade on my eyes, plus, if it starts to rain, you have some built in protection (it does seem to do a decent job of keeping rainwater off my glasses).

I only use mine in heavy rain, it keeps water off my glasses.

I have a 2004 S1 helmet with the adjustable visor. It has vertical adjustment. I set it high for the trails and lower it for the commute.

I stopped riding with my visor. Restricted vision in the aerobars. And dodgy safety if you ever face plant.

I did like how it shaded my eyes from the sun though.

I like my Bell Ukon and find the visor provides good shade and does not obscure my view of the road at all.

Use one almost every day without any problems. Helps keep down glare on sunny days and protects from the rain and helmet drip on rainy days, helping me to see better.

My Bell helmet came with one, and I use it.

I used to race motorcycles with a visor on, so I naturally bought a bike helment with one. Sun, rain, rocks, bugs and dirt are good enough reasons to wear one. Now if I could just find one with the Hallman flipup visor, I would be set.
