Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Another Reason For Double Straps...

Sunday at the hooligan picnic, riders were racing between locations. Vu was approaching a yellow light, as he locked it up he broke a strap and went down head first. 14 stitches on has head, a bloody face, and road rash. Double straps are where it's at unless you don't need to city stop.

What kind of strap? Was it laminated? Unlaminated straps make me nervous. That's rough though. I hope he heals up okay.

Come on. If he didn't maintain his straps, do you think he would've maintained a mechanical brake? Given a poorly maintained laminated strap and a poorly maintained handbrake, I'd put my money on the strap every time.

youre are not the champ.. you need a new name.. so when your front brake cable snaps and you hit a pole can we give you the boo hoo also? or how about just for riding a bike? the day you get hit by a car? wah wah.. thats what you get for riding bikes on the road... some people are perfectly capable of riding bikes with no bar brakes as long as their straps dont break.. but it could have easily been a cable..

freeswheel on hayes has these leather squares that two sets of 9 dollar leather straps lace through. makes a 30$ set of double straps, and you can replace a broken strap. ramblinworker.com

im feeling your sarcasm.. but ill take it as a compliment anyway....and since you dont get it..ill explain.. i have a problem with the guy riding a bike on the street telling the guy without a hand brake that he's an idiot and he deserves to get hurt..some people see biking on the street as dangerous also.. so does he deserve it if he gets hit by a car? i'd say no... we all choose to do dangerous stuff..if we didn't we'd never leave the house... some people can ride a bike without a brake 100x better then ive seen people ride bikes with 2 brakes.. so do the bad weekend warrior cyclists also deserve what they get when the tip over cause they dont know how to get out of toe straps? i think no to that one too.. and no to the guy whose brake malfunctions.. of which ive read about happening about as many times as ive read about clip straps breaking..actually more times.. no one deservers to get hurt if the are ridinng in their ability.. in closing.. i was trying to politely tell the self-rightous a$$ to consider what he is saying

another quick comment, i haven't ever had a strap randomly break on me. any time they start showing wear or the clasp starts getting weak, i replace them.

i'm thinking the title of this thread should be "another reason to maintain all parts of your bicycle."

Double Straps doesn't guarantee either. He should have checked his gear before going out. We get to comfortable with our gear thinking it is going to last forever or hold up forever.

I have brand new Alfredo Binda straps and just put them on 2 weeks ago and they were crap. Why did this happen the straps are 13 yrs old and was in storage that long . NOS as you can say.

Look over your gear before stepping out or somebody will be doing the stepping on you.

oh, please. If every ignorant Huffy rider needed to care for primitive leather straps-- as opposed to primitive single-pul cantis with rusted everything, loose bolts and bad pads-- there'd be a lot more dead cyclists.


Fixed is a boutique hobby. If you're running antiquated systems (fixed gear, clips/straps. brakeless), then it follows that you keep an eye on what you know to be important.

One cannot anticipate leather snapping mid-stop unless damage had been noted beforehand. I guess if I were brakeless, I'd pay way more attention to strap adjustment and quality.

And even though I run a brake-- it's never the first reaction.

they are the worst. as you pull them through your pedals, they delaminate completly. its like watching a 50$ bill go through a paper shreader. wait, that would be more fun... they are called sprints. do not buy them ever. like ceya said. new old stock is like it sounds, old, including the glue...

Yep i bought them 13 plus years ago and expected them to be like new when I bought them. They are not steel but fibers that time took over and made the fragile.

It is up to the rider to check his gear..the bike can't say HEY BUD , I NEED NEW STRAPS. Remember you fail to do your job if the bike fails to be maintain... WE GET TOO COMFORTABLE NOT CHECKING GEAR!

just like not putting on a seatbelt.. when you crash or get in accident .it is YOU who is responsible for your and everybody's life with you. Driving or not!
