Mountain Biking - Would this be a good bike for....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

1) Does about 80% of his riding on the roads/20% on hard-packed trails
2) Has no intention of doing anything "fancy" (jumping, serious off-road riding)
3) Simply likes the relative stability/safety/comfort of a MTB over a road bike

I'm willing to go up to $150.00 for it (total: $199.95, including shipping).
Opinions, please. Thanks!

It's not a very great bike, but I guess it would do.

Well, for what you are going to be doing it is fine. I'm not sure that you should pay $200 for the bike for at least two reasons: (1) It might not fit. You'd hate to drop $200 for a ride that doesn't feel right. (2) If you really wanted a GT Aggressor, you could probably get a brand new 2005 for about $250 (the MSRP is $300).
Like Socrates said...you could get a brand new one without speding much more.
I'd go to your LBS and test ride bikes in your price range to make sure you're getting a bike that fits.

There are a lot of bikes out there that would be great for what you want and you can be certain of the fit. Check some of the Giants and Treks in your local bike shop. You could get something much better in the $350.00 range.

I agree, for $200 it's a good deal. However, to me, bike fit is crucial. If you're not comfortable on the bike, it'll sit in your garage. Then you've wasted $200.
Entry level bikes start at around $300, which is about what that bike is worth if it were new.
