this is really a lifesaver for anyone who exits the bridge and has to ride east on sands street, through the line of fast-moving traffic turning onto the BQE.

good news. i'm curious if they have anything in the works for the williamsburg bridge entrance on delancey street. unfortunately, i doubt it.

the williamsburg bridge situation isn't as bad. delancey is a mess, but even if you ride down a median for a ways, you still have to cross it.

as it stands, you can just cross at the light and go right up clinton st, no riding on large roads required.

when you want to head east off the manhattan bridge, you basically have no choice other than riding on the busy street.

it's not *elevated*, it is on a raised median.

yeah, i misspoke. still far better than a bike lane in the street.

Not necessarily. Does it have a grade crossing with Gold St? That can pose both a risk from right and left turning traffic which doesn't expect a cyclist to be crossing on the median... a sidepath if you will.

Also, Boston has these sorts of median paths (at least one along Commonwealth Ave) and it's generally too congested with dog walkers, joggers, and slower cyclists to be a good transportational route--in addition to the very real danger posed by turning traffic.

Even the people I know who love themselves some infrastructure don't advocate for serious cyclists to use the bridle path on Comm Ave.

See that white van on the left in the photo? That's right about where I got creamed last Sunday afternoon. My own damn fault, but I'll take a little infrastructure in this spot. The Brooklyn Bridge is unpassable on the weekends, and the Manhattan's dedicated path is basically the bomb.

I'm glad I don't wear cleated shoes, or some mothas on the Brooklyn Bridge would have SPD marks in their asses by now, courtesy of me.

i usually go up jay and just skip the whole mess. makes me wonder just how the DOT will eff this up though. speedbumps? those cattle gate zig zag fences you have to get off and walk thru? they'll think of something...
