Van involved in hit-and-run fatality found burning in nearby ditch

BY JOHN CHAMBLISS
Of The Post and Courier Staff

Minutes after a van struck and killed a female bicyclist on Rivers Avenue early Wednesday, North Charleston police found the van in flames in a nearby ditch.
The driver, however, was nowhere in sight.

Leyda Jimenez, 35, of North Charleston, died at the scene from head trauma, said Judy Koelpin, Charleston County deputy coroner.

The burning van was found in a nearby ditch off Highland Terrace Drive.

Based on damage to the front of the van, police were able to determine that the burned van was the vehicle that struck Jimenez. Police are still searching for the driver.

Jimenez was riding her bike east on Rivers Avenue just south of Interstate 526 about 4 a.m. when she was struck by the eastbound van, said Spencer Pryor, a spokesman with the police department.

About 20 minutes later, police received a call about the van.

On Wednesday, police would not confirm that the van was intentionally set on fire.

The van was destroyed, but police were unable to find gasoline or any other accelerants, Pryor said.

It was the third hit-and-run fatality this year in North Charleston. Arrests were made in the other two.

3 hit-and-run fatalities this year? Unbelievable. Hopefully they will get an arrest for this one too. I'd be interested to read any follow up news on this story. If you read anything else please post it.

I wish they gave more information. This statement is so vague. The whole story is strange. It sounds like the driver tried to cover up the evidence by torching the vehicle.

How can these people live with themselves after doing something like this?

there's nothing on the web that i can find about it, but i do know that there has been an arrest made in the case... other than that, i don't know anything more.

In my ideal fantasy world, the explanation for all of this is that a roving group of vigilante bicyclists tracked the driver down, torched his van, then beat the crap out of him while taking him out to the middle of a South Carolina swamp to leave him to the alligators (or whatever critters they have down there).

The reality is that the guy was probably just trying to destroy evidence. Still, a man can dream...

I'd hate to see what was left of a cyclists if the impact caused damage to cause an auto to catch fire. The road this ocured on is a VERY busy main road, not very safe for someone to bike on.

FYI: North Carleston is a separate incorparated city from Charleston. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Charleston C of C try to take action against bikeforums.net.

I'm not surprised that the driver torched the vehicle. Most drivers in that area would torch a car if it got a flat tire, rather than fix an easy problem. That area by far is my least favorite place I've lived, and I've made a resolution to drive completely around the entire state if I need to get from NC to FL.

Rivers Ave was the only road in existence for that area that I found "useable" by a bicyclist. Even so, the only time I went on that road was during rush hour so that a car that hit me wouldn't have had the opportunity to get going very fast.

i know folks that commute to work safely on Rivers all the time - o/c, they are all north of I526 when they do. i wouldn't even walk down the sidewalk south of I526.

nobody who hasn't lived in or visited SC has heard of North Charleston. plus, it's still the Charleston-metro area and occurred in Charleston County. heck, the whole tri-county is considerd the Charleston-metro area.

don't think so. considering the Charleston Metro Chaber of Commerce (founded 1773, btw) covers the entire tri-county area, they'd probably say that the incicdent occurred in Charleston also. it's a geographic area, not just a city.

Woah...

I hope they seriously find that driver...
