Good luck find a good FS bike for under 500, but there are many hardtails that are under 500. Here are some:

Hmm... yeah, I might go for a hardtail, I've taken a liking to them recently.

You won't get a decent full suspension bike for under £1000 so I suggest you look at hardtails.

At work, we're selling a GT I-drive comp for £500, I recon that's a good deal. Have a look at the Carrera Banshee 05, and the Carrera LRS 3. Or look around on eBay for second hand bikes.
What do you want it for? XC/DH/Freeride?

Umm.. all of them really, but mostly XC and DH.

Yep! The I-drive comp is alright for £500, it was something like £900 when they bought it out. I'm a big fan of the Carreras, I recon they are nice bikes.
To the poster, XC and DH are very different disiplines (sp?). If I were you, I'd go for some form of Hardtail, Specialised Hardrock or something. If you do DH on one of the bikes I orrigonally suggested, you'll nacker it.
