Road Cycling - Trek Y Frame

I recently purchased a 1999 Trek Y frame from an on-line auction site. I was surprised at such a low reserve and figured that it couldn't hurt to buy it and tinker with it.

However I have read many recent regulations regarding the 'Y' frame design. My question/concern was the following:

What limitations am I allowed with this frame? I understand it was mainly designed to be used as a TT frame. However what category or level of sponsored races will allow this frame? Or are there any from what I was reading on U.C.I.'s site.

I heard that the Y-frame road bikes don't hold up very well. Hence them being discountinued. I just heard it through word of mouth though. I think it's a cool bike.

Actually the Y-Foil frames are very durable. They were only made two years '98 and '99. The reason they were discontinued is because Trek didn't market it well. They marketed the frame toward road racers. Ironically as of 1999, UCI ruled that all road race frames be at least two triangles. That meant that a racer couldn't race on a Y-Foil. Trek saw this and discontinued the road bike lineup. They still made Y-Foil Mountain bikes and did well with them. However, exotic looking bikes are fads- they get played out in a short amount of time- especially amongst the MTB crowd. 1998 Y Foils are called the 66 models and 1999 ones are called the 77 models I believe. There's a shop by my house that has three Y-Foil frames hanging in the shop. I asked the owner if they were for sale and he said they are for display only. Nothing is wrong with them but he says these frames are an example of great engineering beyond hindered by politics.

meh. They're okay. I supported a woman racer for a few years on a Y-77. A lot more plastic there than was needed, it was actually kind of a heavy piece. I predict, though, that it will be a minor collector's piece some day. set it up, have fun with it, but buy a real race bike.

Some guy in my area rides a Y-foil and kicks some major AS$ on it. Guy absolutely flys up hill on one of those things. Lesson: it's not about the bike...oh wait, that expressions already been used.:innocent:

Great frame. Hope to add one to the collection some day.

Mine's the one on the right. They are legal for triathlons.
