Deore XT shifters with 105 derraileurs?

has anyone tried this? I'm thinking of using a set of Deore XT shifters on drop bars coupled with aero brake levers (and top mounted in-line brake levers). The shifters and aero brake levers would be on the flats and the aero brake levers would be on the drops.

Any thoughts?

No problem with rear shifting. The front will more than likely work if it is a double, but a triple probably won't (unless you are talking about thumbshifters, then it will work fine). The bar clamp diameter on the shifters will be too small to clamp onto your drop bars. If you have access to a machine shop, you could very easily have the clamp enlarged. I suspect you could even do it with a dremel if you feel up to it.

You could get a set of Pauls thumbies mounts in 26.0mm size, and get a pair of bar cons to make some 8, 9 or even 10 speed thumbshifters, but it is $$$.

I researched the very same thing. The clamp diameter of the xt shifters are for mtn bars at 25.4 and road bars are at 26. Here's what I found:
- Bontrager used to make a 25.4 drop bar. Don't know if they still do or if other mfgrs do.
- A bike shop may be able to ream out your XT shifters.
- Use thumbies that have a steel clamp, like LX, which can be spread to fit the wider road bars. (XT clamps are aluminum).

Instead of flat bar controls, did you think of barcons. Shimano's are very reasonably priced and come in 8,9 or 10 speed. Unlike Shimano brifters, pure junk, the barcons are indestructable. They are also very easy to set up. Take it from a knuckle dragger like me, they really work.

I've done the clamp thing to fit my XT shifters on Profile bull horns. A dremel using a 1/2 inch drum sander bit worked out great. Just be careful to take material off uniformly all the way around so there are no thin spots.
