Touring - Spain on a bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm planning to spend at least a few weeks touring Spain (and possibly Portugal) this fall. I'm prepared as far as my bike, health and money are concerned-- but this will be my first time touring in Europe and my first time touring alone-any tips or suggestions??
Pack and repack to get the weight down
Other than that, good luck, have fun, and I'd say learn how to read a map as you will want to keep off all the main roads, but you have a problem, the Spanish are definatly the worst map makers in Europe, and probably in the worst most of the civilized world, so maps should be used as a guide at best.
Get some books - the Lonly Planet ones are good, where are you heading for, Spain is a big country.
WELCOME to the Forums, Gracie.
Try to be as self-contained as possible: that is, be able to fix flats, make mechanical adjustments...that sort of thing.
One of my sons lived in Spain for a few years. Never stops raving about it. The people, the climate ...everything. You're in for a wonderful adventure. Hope you'll consider keeping the rest of us posted on the Touring Board when you finally depart.

Gracie-
I haven't toured Spain, but I heard that travelling Spain by bike was do-able. The only other thing I heard about doing Spain by bike was that it was very hilly, so if you get an opportunity, spend time training in the hills where you live, if you can.
Good luck with the tour and keep us informed.

I haven't been there either, but I am planning a trip there in 2003 to possibly cycle the pyrenees. Anybody know anything about that region?
Here is a link I found to some european cycle-touring info
