Commuting - Homemade trailer - hitch advice needed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

As if I don't have enough projects going on, I want to undertake building a trailer for my commuter bike so I can do full on grocery trips etc. I've been searching and searching for a good hitch method.

I've decided I would prefer to use a seatpost attachment (as opposed to an axle attachement) as the interface between bike and trailer. Now, I could do something that allows only side to side movement like many trailers that mount to the seat post or frame, but I would prefer to have something that will allow me to lean the bike in turns without toppling the load.

The picture below shows how Cycletote (http://www.cycletote.com/) does their hitch - a minerature ball hitch. This is exactly what I'm looking for. Anyone have a source for something like this? I tried my old stand by McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/) but they don't have anything. They do have some minerature universal joints, but anything that is on the reasonably priced side isn't load rated and I'm suspecting might not hold up to repeated use with heavy loads.

I've done some extensive searching on the internet, but I'm coming up dry. Any help would be appreciated. I can still consider a single arm frame axle mount design with the same characteristics (think Burley (http://www.burley.com/) trailers), but still would need a reasonable priced hitch.

Thanks in advance.

Check automotive or aircraft sources. I realize that's awful vague, but I've seen those ball joints in other than bicycle applications --I'm just not sure where.

You might go to the ihpva.org and check out the workbike forum. There have been messages on home built trailers. People have offered several websites, but I don't have them saved. I seem to recall one design similar to a BOB that looked pretty interesting.

Hmmm, ihpva.org seems to be down. I'll have to check back later. Thanks for the suggestion.

P.S You must show pics of the trailer when finished!

Thanks for the link Anders. I've checked this site out earlier and it's given me some inspiration. I'm still in the R&D phase, so it will be a bit before I build, but I plan on documenting the process w/ photos.

Still looking for the cheap, but strong hitch. the search continues...

Go to an auto salvage yard, the thing in the picture looks just like a pivot for the gas shocks that hold up the rear door on my Jeep.

On another note, I've pulled trailers (100's of miles) that are hitched to the seat post and hooked at the axle, IMHO you should reconsider, axle mount is hands down the way to go.

Must you connect it to your seatpost? Why not to the rear triangle?

here is a couple more links I hope you have use of.

Anders -

No, I don't have to connect to the seatpost. I thought this would be the easier of the two connections to switch between the two bikes I would most likely use the trailer with. After reading Threadend's experiences, and doing more research and evaluating other designs, I'm starting to lean towards the rear triangle mount. Regardless of the attaching method, I'm still searching for a good hitch at this point. Thanks for everyone's info so far.

Thanks for the links Anders, I've got those on my list. Project temporarily on hold, but still collecting info and contemplating design.
