Mountain Biking - Sram or Shimano Derailleurs?

Which one is good to for street? I have a 7 speed cassette, or does that not matter? Just some thing cheap and works good.

I don't even know if you will be able to find a 7spd deraileur. In either.

For street. SS, if you are doing serious riding anyways. Deraileurs aren't the best for a good grind :)

Thats not a 7 spd. Its 9spd. 7 is just the designation similar to LX or xt type of deal.

You can buy a cheap package deal on a 9speed setup these days. Get a new cassette, rear derailleur and shifters. You can easily keep it under $100. You'll probably want to throw in a new chain too. That'd be about $15 - $20 extra.

A nine speed derailieur will shift howevermany gears it's told to by the shifter. If you have a 7 speed shifter it will shift SEVEN gears

It will work fine but I need to know what ytou have for shifters on the bike right now as it won't work with Shimano or SRAM's MRX stuff

Umm NO that won't work for him. Seven speed freehubs won't accept the wider 9 speed cassette. He'd have to at the very least get a new freehub mechanism (if possible) and have the wheel redished. Of course there's always just buying a 8/9 wheel......

It doesnt matter what "speed" the derailleur is as long as it's range of motion can cover all gears. With that said, what shifters do you have?

Well if this helps, I have a 7 speed cassette in which my rear derailleur was replaced due to damage, I asked the shop to put something cheap but decent on, and they gave me a Shimano Altus, it shifts nicely and was very cheap. I use it for some bouncy trail riding action and street use, both I get fine results with for it being such a cheap derailleur. It was like $10 or something. But as for availability, I'm not sure about that, I don't think it's made anymore.
