I am a newbie who wants some clipless pedals. They must be SPD compatible. I was looking at eggbeaters, time atac's, or shimano's. What do you guys think are the best? Pro's and con's??

Whoa...this could get people fired up! There are some fiercely loyal riders out there when pedals, saddles and most components are mentioned. I won't go into the Campy vs. Shimano debate.;)
I haven't tried every pedal out there but I have had luck with Ritcheys and most Shimano spd pedals. I'm still looking to try the current darlings in the pedal category, the eggbeaters and the Time ATAC's. They seem to have the fewest cons.

Fiercly loyal in an understatement. I honestly did get a little ri-led (no idea how to spell it) up when I say this.
EggBeaters- easy clip/unclip, four sided entry, best mudd shedding out there, only cost 90 vs. 150 up for the times carbons, etc. Extremely lightweight. Want any more reasons?

Just a quick note: TIME's, Frogs, and Eggbeaters are NOT SPD compatible. They each require a specific cleat. Also, the 959's from Shimano use a specific cleat vs. the standard SPD.
BTW, I use the Time A.T.A.C. composite body( just under $100) and love them! Had them for over 2 years and still working great! I even use them on my road bike!

TIME - not SPD compatible
Egg Beaters - not SPD compatible
Shimano 959 - SPD-R
If you must have SPD compatible, I suggest Ritchey Comps, or Wellgos. They are not top of the line these days, but they are reasonable pedals, afffordable and a good place to start. Both are SPD compatible.

WHen you say SPD compatable, do you mean the shoe? Or do you actually have a SPD cleat that you need to use with a pedal.
SPD compatable (i hate spelling) simply means that the cleat accepts a SPD shoe.
But obviously all different systems use different cleats.
If you are talking SPD compatiable with the shoes, EggBeaters, Times, and 959's are all SPD. Frogs aren't

i guess i had no idea what spd meant. The shoes i got are those 9.99 specialized shoes and they say spd compatible so i thought i needed special pedals. But now i think i understand what spd means. It is just the cleat and any pedal will fit on any shoe aslong as the cleat is right for the pedals. I think that is right.

I got my Eggbeaters 7 months ago (I was one of the lucky ones) prior to that I rode ATACs for 3 years, and I loved the ATACS, but I hate to say it but the egg beaters are way better - in every aspect - the only short side I know of them is that the cleats wear a bit faster that the Times, after 7 months I'm going to have to change them soon. However I have two bikes with these pedals, so I've got an extra set of cleats laying around somwhere.
