Living Car Free - Sticky suggestion-- pics of the bike that helps you be car-free

Everybody else has them, why not here? I bet people who don't own cars at all end up with set-ups even more utilitarian than those featured in the commuting forum.

So if you want to post a picture of the ride that gets you to work, school, picks up the groceries, etc. etc. do it here. Post all your rides if you use a few to get around.

This is the one I rode to work tonight. Since the pics were shot, I've put a rear rack, Carradice saddlebag and a headlight on the bike. It doesn't haul much.

I'll post a pic of my grocery getter once my girlfriend gets back with the camera.

Is that the Burley cargo rack for the Nomad? How do you like it? I have a Nomad, and I've thought about getting the cargo rack. Man I love that trailer--the last tour I did with a few guys I brought the trailer and I was our SAG wagon--I fit in two tents, all my clothes, my sleeping bag, an extensive tool kit, food and extra water. I've fit some pretty crazy stuff in that trailer, including loading it down with boxes of dishes while moving (3 boxes stacked and secured with an adundance of bungee). The Nomad was one of the things I bought when I sold my car and I'm impressed with it everytime I use it. It allows you to carry alot of weight much more easily than loading down your bike. I don't have to use it often, but when the situation arises it's a godsend.

Yes that is a Burley cargo rack, it's great! I can put my suit case with the suit in it, all my test books, and anything else I can thow at it. If you just have the Nomad i would go out and buy the cargo rack, you can bring so much more.

A german woman gave me this bike and I fixed it up. I drove it 20 miles/day for a year or so commuting, and used it for errands for a few years after that. It had a nice sachs 7 speed rear hub and a sturdy rack.
It had an integrated electric system with a rear light that would stay on for a few minutes after you stop.
This photo was after i put it in the dumpster and someone else got a free bike. I had removed the lighting
system and pedals to my parts bin. I post this because in another car free thread someone complained abouta a tall euro bike that had stability problems with heavy loads. This bike had no stability problems with heavy loads and you can see it is also "tall". If you look carefully between the upper down tube and the pivot point of the front fork you can see what looks like a worm. It is a spring that makes it easy to steer through small angles but progressively harder the more you steer. Maybe this spring had something to do with the stability? I only noticed that it prevented the handlebars from turning too much when I was loading groceries and the bike was on its kickstand. It might not be too hard for someone to gin up a
little spring like that if they're having problems.
