Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - a paint job question???!!!

i have a chrome finish on my bike (bianchi pista) and i was planning of getting a paint job, but my friend said that it would cost a lot because they would have to strip the finish, idono it makes sense, but i'm just wondering if any one can expand on the subject, and if so any alternatives, or special do it your self ways idono something

I am currently in the process of having my pista powdercoated. I took the frame and fork to a company that chromes car bumpers and what not and asked them to strip it. All they do is dunk it in some chemical tank overnight and the chrome just comes off. They are charging me 25 bucks so I thought that was reasonable. But yeah, you cant paint or powdercoat over chrome and expect it to look good or even last.

talk to jacques at jax about this. he was just offering me some sweet powdercoating services for what he called "a reasonable price". he made it sound like one of his friends got a powdercoating machine or something like that, i don't know. but it sounded like a long term standing offer.

But yeah, you cant paint or powdercoat over chrome and expect it to look good or even last.

but what about 70s european frames/forks that had paint over chrome? some special kinda paint?

Hmm, no answer here:
I have seen Bianchi (road bike) factory painted over chrome and the paint was flaking. I have 17 year old Gianni Motta - Ferrari red painted over chrome still looking as good as new.

does jasco paint remover not work on cheap chrome?
i use jasco to remove good/bad paint jobs, works but is deadly and prolly gave me cancer lol, ask a hardware store duder, they have a chemical for lots of stuff

They paint/coat the tubes that aren't going to be chromed and chrome the ends that will be. There's no overlap.

I've had frames with chrome stays and lugs, the entire frame has been chromed, only the exposed bits polished though. Painting over quality chrome isn't a problem, powder coating might be though.

does sandblasting/beadblasting not take off chrome?

On those frames, the painted parts were chromes but NOT POLISHED. So the paint stuck to the rough surfaced chrome.

lots of things that will dissolve chrome will also pit or otherwise damage steel...be careful

lots of powdercoaters in east oakland/san leandro/hayward. Call and ask if they do bike frames. Also, a friend of mine in berkeley will prep/strip/powdercoat/face/rebuild bikes not too expensive. pm me for his info.

Any very smooth metal surface is not going to be particularly receptive to a new coating without some kind of surface preparation (like sanding and ideally some primer) before the color coat. I recommend powdercoating for a durable finish with an industrial look. I got my single speed mountain bike frame sand blasted and powdercoated by a powdercoating outfit for about $70. If you pick a popular color they can put your frame in with the next job in that color. Based on how the frame looked after the sandblasting, I imaging that sandblasting would remove chrome as well.

I have a Santa Cruz Roadster fixed gear that I may have powdercoated as well. The factory finish is very nice, but an employee of my local bike shop put a very small chip in the paint on top tube. He was extremely sorry but refused to let me take a hammer to his frame. The current electrician's tape repair is not a permanent solution.

i've been told if you want paint to stick to chrome you need to use an etching primer first. it has a chemical in it that lightly etches a slightly rough texture into the surface, which allows the primer and paint to stick to the chromed surface.
