ROUEN, France (Reuters) - The Mapei team was quick to react when a thief broke into the hotel room of world champion Oscar Freire on Wednesday night at the Tour de France.
The thief got into Freire's room, stealing his mobile phone and some money, but was spotted by one of the Mapei-Quick Step staff and the team quickly blocked all the hotel doors and caught him red handed.
The man, who is from Paris and has a police record, was handed over to the police in Reims.
"We got everything back, my mobile telephone and the money and so it's okay," Freire told Reuters before the start of the 195-kilometer fifth stage from Soissons to Rouen.
"He broke into my room with a special key but we caught him before he could escape."
