Road Cycling - Time off means a higher heart rate...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just came back from 9 days on vacation. Didn't even get on a bike so I'm well rested and out of shape (again). The interesting thing was my heart rate is way high (again). I normally commute at around 140-150s heart rate. But today my heart rate was way up there in the upper 160s to 180s! I didn't feel bad but why would my heart have to work that hard? Did I lose all that aerobic conditioning?

Most of it is not permanently lost. If the layoff was only 9 days, you should be able to regain nearly the condition you had before fairly quickly. You begin to lose aerobic condition after 36 hours. A 9 day layoff would definately mean a higher heart rate the first time you ride.
