it's not often that i get to drive a new car or any car for that matter - but i got the chance to drive a new subaru over the weekend. i couldn't believe how fast i got up to 60mph. it seriously felt like i was going 25 or 30mph. completely smooth and comfortable. i felt totally in control. even when i let up on the gas i kept finding the speed creaping up. the car felt "right" at 65mph or above - way past the speed limit. driving at 40, for example, felt agonizingly slow. i found it quite difficult to slow down enough to follow the speed limit.
as a cyclist i always complain that cars go too fast...but as a driver, it really doesn't seem like that. i guess it all depends on your perspective. i wonder if newer cars just feel a lot safer and stable so people tend to drive them faster?

You're onto something for sure. People are demanding smoother, more comfortable rides, so the feeling of speed has changed dramatically. I had a '69 Plymouth, and when you were doing 70, you knew you were doing something. You felt it and you were making a lot of noise. In any modern car, you have very little sensation of speed until you are going very fast indeed.
When I had my old '76 Gremlin any time I got above 45 he let me know it, I probably have irrepairable spinal damage from the shaking but oh well.
With my '03 Saturn I rarely can tell the differance between doing 35 and 70, so twahl is definately on to something.
It is still no excuse, just because you feel comfortable going 65mph doesn't mean you should if the limit of speed is substantially lower.
Just because you can get from the top of a 10 story high rise faster by jumping than taking the stairs does not mean it's a smarter/safer move.
