Okay, so I'm thinking really hard about getting "bicycle shoes." You know - the funny looking things sold only in bike shops that you would never walk in, but claim to make your ride better. I don't even have clipless pedals! Even more extreme, I use chinese slippers to ride in! :oO I just bought some water sport shoes... they might just work out... but when on rides over 30 miles, my toes hurt from digging into the clips. Can I use "bicycle shoes" with platform pedals and clips? So far every article of "bicycle clothing" that I've bought has really improved my comfort - but those expensive shoes! Yikes! What are you guys wearing out there? Thanks.
Get Shimano Sandals. They are $75, but sooooooo comfortable. I use them for riding and just casual walking around.
If you don't want to spend that, go to www.pricepoint.com and get their generic spd sandals for something like $30. Your feet will thank you!

Oooh! Sandals! I'll have a look, thank you. Just took a test ride with the OP "water shoes." They were almost great, but I suspected that my toes might still mash against the toe clips when I start getting frothy up the hills. :p
oakley and a few other companies make cycling specific sneaker style shoes that have stiff soles. More toe comfort and better foot support for your longer rides. The relatively smooth soles also won't catch on your pedals.

Koffee, do you happen to have the model of those Shimano sandals? I just went to their website and didn't see anything that looked like sandals...just regular biking shoes.

well, those are nice! but they are nearly as much as the bicycle shoes i've tried on. sigh! i'll look at the sandals again, but that little voice is telling me that i'll likely be spending the money and getting the funny looking bicycle shoes.

Pricepoint doesn't have Shimano. They have a generic spd sandal: http://www.pricepoint.com/detail.htm?stylepkey=13425&detailName=Sette%20MK%20SPD%20Sandals&style_id=285%20SETMK4&dept_id=&deptName=&sub_id=&subName=&lprice=29.98&hprice=29.98
I got my shimano sandals at performancebike.com.
