Hi everyone,
Just finished my most rewarding tour so far! It was a seven day, 210 mile mountain bike trip, from Telluride to Moab. The journey allows you to experience the topography change as you head farther and father west, from the high alpine setting around Telluride, through the Uncomphagre national forest, down and through the canyons around Gateway, CO, ending in the desert slick rock of Moab.
We used the San Juan Hut System, www.sanjuanhuts.com, which has huts placed every 35 miles or so along the route. The huts are stocked with all the food and sleeping bags you need, so you can travel light. We travelled ultra-light using large Camel Baks as our only bags...this worked great.
The riding is quite varied, as you can imagine, mostly on fire roads, though there are some highly recommended single track options for a few of the days, with supposedly more to come. Throughout the seven days you ascend close to 17,000 feet and descend around 20,000. Day 6 was pretty tough, a 22 mile climb from the canyon floor in Gateway, CO, up John Brown Canyon, into the La Sal mountains, which are beautiful.
All in all a great first mountain bike tour. Hope you are all having a nice summer. Zach.
