Mountain Biking - Cheap mountain bike, but it works! (on roads)

You guys! I bought this bike at a cheap bike shop for 3,500 pesos (that's about 65 US dollars). I just replaced the shifters with Shimanos, the cogset, rear derailleur, chain and seat. All the rest is stock. Tell me what you think about it! :)

It has a steel frame, which is quite heavy, but it gives you a real workout (I'm not sure about the welding). The shifters are Shimano (Malaysia) w/ no model. I forgot the brand of chain, just that it's lightweight or something. I bought the replacement parts from my brother-in-law's bike shop, where you can get good quality (though brandless) parts. Most of them are from Japan, China and Taiwan. There's a shop here that sells all-original parts but they can get quite expensive.

Nope, no jumps yet. I guess I'm worried I might break it :) I mainly use it as a road bike, coz our highways here are quite okay.

Hey dude! Are you from the Philippines originally? What part? I guess $400 is a pretty nice bike, if I spent an equivalent amount here. My girlfriend's dad is a real bike enthusiast, and I think he spent close to 100,000 pesos on it (current exchange rate is $1=54.50 pesos). He basically had it assembled, it has a GIANT frame, all other parts are Shimano Deore and XT. It's pretty sweet!

I call Bulacan my home. P100,000 on a bike? Damn. You'd think he could get a tricycle for that price! Or even a jeep! but then again, those take gas and diesel, so, I guess a high (VERY high) quality bike is worth it becuase its human powered.

Yup, he very well could. Actually, he has 2 bikes, one for the road & the other for trails, I guess. Haven't been to Bulacan, just to Metro Manila. Btw, he had an accident last month, fractured his collarbone. I heard that he had to swerve suddenly to avoid a big bus, ended up hitting his buddy.

I was biking earlier this morning, and I've noticed that it's kinda painful after a while on my seat. I'm using a somewhat narrow one (in the pix). Do I have to replace it with a wider/softer saddle?

Softer is always good, but that too could make you numb. Or you could try to get a suspension seat post.

There is also the easy way of just adding foam and covering it with a cheap seat cover. That is very innovative.

I don't think so. I've always found the firmer saddle more comfortable in the long run. The initial pain will gradually go away as you get used to it, and it gets used to you (forms to you).

I would keep her on the road if you prefer not to be injured. I guess if it's a runner and it's smooth thats fine. The color scheme is, well, different. I suggest a next upgrade of flat black spray paint and a little masking to give her a new look.
