Since we are on the subject of chains
does anyone know what chain is compatable
with campy 8 speed? Campy chains aren't
available (8 speed) anymore and Rohloff
are fairly steep ($39).
will any 8 speed chain work or will I need
something specific?

I've been using 8 speed Sachs (Sedis) chains for years, and the cheapest at that . No problems

When I built up my Campy 8 my LBS talked me into a Campy 9 chain. I had doubts but it's working fine.

i like my sachs/sedis/sram chain

thats on shimano though
